Bugsy loves to hunt for moles/voles and is very good at catching them. He has killed dozens upon dozens. Recently (the last two he's caught) he has clearly considered eating them. He has caught and eaten rabbits which for whatever reason doesn't bother me but I don't feel comfortable with him eating moles. I appreciate any info regarding whether its safe or not for him to eat them. Thanks

My concern would be if the moles had come from an area where they may have ingested poison that people have used to get rid of them.

yeah that would be the concern... mine have eaten them... but we don't put poison out since we have the dogs... and I am pretty sure these moles live only in our yard we have a ton of tunnel in our yard and right by our house....

Thank you both, I hadn't even considered poison. They are in such numbers here that everyone seems to tolerate them, and I don't know of anyone that poisons them, but better safe than sorry!

I think the same thing - the poison. We have a mole problem - you can literally trip over their tunnels in the front yard. None in the back where the dogs go.

I will caution against eating rabbits. I consider my dogs to be "meat dogs" I don't mind them finding rabbits when we are out hunting and I used to let them retrieve rabbits. Rabbits will have fleas all year around and I really didn't care b/c I keep flea and tick dope on my dogs year round. The catch is that fleas carry tapeworms and when fleas are swallowed the tapeworm will take up residence in your dog. I found this out the hard way. Now my pups are point ONLY!

As for moles...My pups are also Ace rodent hunters but I just don't risk it and I discourage eating them as much as possible.

Thanks I did read about the rabbits & tapeworms (there is some other disease too) and I always do my best to stop him from eating them. We have an acre that is partially wooded so being completely honest he is going to catch them from time to time. He has also gotten into their warrens a few times as he's got hold of a clutch of babies :(

Up until the last two he hasn't shown interest in eating the moles, I am better able to catch him in the act of catching them but I am kind of worried that he'll swallow one as I approach.
Once again thanks all

yeah we do our best not to let them but it does happen... I have been talking to neighbors and only the other ag property has moles and he doesn't use poison cuz they have cats... the other residential properties say they don't have them so they haven't put anything out... but I still try and stop killing and eating them... I do think Donner either got into poison or got an animal that did and that is how he died, but Striker was a totally different situation and I don't think that is what happened....

:(
My heart breaks for you and all your family (((((HUGS))))

We live in a community that has lots and lots of natural areas - all lots are 1-8 acres and it backs up to a huge lake and has lots of agricultural land nearby so wildlife is abundant.
Moles are a plague here and no one even tries to win the battle. Some have tried the sound emitting things but without any luck.
Bugsy has a reputation as an excellent moler and we are often asked if we'll bring him in to people's yards :)
Who knew a giant mutt would be such an efficient moler LOL
