Hi all,
I brought home a 4y/o male GSP today. He's got some trust issues, and is extremely shy around new people. He's warming up fast to us, but it will take work to get him use to hands-on stranger interaction. Any tips on that would be great.
No one is 100% if he's pure bred, but he seems to have all of the traits: his coat, liver color, webbed feet, stub tail,... but he does have green eyes, and I'm curious if that's at all a regular trait in adults (I know it is in puppies).

Welcome, and congrats on your new addition. Biggest piece of advice I would first suggest is to take time and focus now on building his trust in your and your family. Once he trusts you, it will be much easier to help him learn to trust others and new situations. From his stature, I would think he has something else mixed in...but he's flashing that GSP smile He's a handsome boy none the less. I also wouldn't say green eyes are normal in GSPs, but I'm no expert. |

| Thanks! He's definitely larger than any GSP I've seen. I'll get a full body shot of him tomorrow. |

Congrats! What a big boy!
No matter what breed he may or not be, he is so handsome and I'm sure very happy to have found his forever home.
Best of luck to you. Enjoy your new friend. |

Welcome! I'm not sure if it's this photo, but I am guessing of a hint of weimaraner. Happy-looking dog, nonetheless. We adopted our GSP at 1.5 yrs, and our Brittany at 7 yrs. I second taking your time with any interaction. Just let him be for the first week or so. A move is stressful. And I wish someone warned us about this one: Be careful of the dog bolting, do not let him off leash in the beginning. It took ours a full year before he trusted us. |

| What a face, how adorable. Have to also say that he looks like a mix and my first guess was also Wiemeraner. depending on his size though and by the looks of his chest migh,t be great dane. |

| I was gonna say mixed with a weim and someone already did... Something about the eyes and I have seen some big weims... plus weims are known to be timid and or have separation anxiety.... of course those are stereo types so they aren't always true... |

Good guess on the weims, guys. And, I have seen adult weims with green eyes. His coloring also has that hint of silver. I'm sure his body type is a little skewed from the way he is sitting in this photo. When you take one of him standing, post it. Not so much to determine what he is, but because he's a handsome boy and everyone here loves pictures! |

my gsp is solid liver with green eyes. I think it's common in multiple litters of the same parents sometimes you get a green eyed male.

VERY much looks like a GSP/weim cross to me and VERY handsome! Thanks for giving a home to a dog that really needed one! My best advice about helping him trust is to keep working on it with him (even though he is already showing signs of trust with you). Through you and the people that come in and out of your home he will slowly trust. Some areas have classes for timid dogs that are really about teaching you how to help them become less timid (I helped a friend with a timid boy a couple of years ago) Everything was just slow - let people know he's timid, socialize him but not overwhelm him. And I suggest having yummy treats for you to give him when he behaves appropriately towards a stranger AND for other people (who are knowledgeable or willing to listen to your instructions) to provide for him Looking forward to his full pic! |

| He looks happy! He isn't quite as deep in the chest I would expect from Weim or GSP. But their body type changes a little with age too. I think his coat would be a little more plush as would the tail and a stouter neck if he had any lab in him. I think GSP/Weim is a good guess. You may never know for sure, but he sure is a handsome happy boy! Kudos for taking him in! |

Adult GSPs do not have green eyes. Do they? |

| A GSPs eyes are brown. You can get a yellow eye, but that is a major fault. No other color eyes for GSPs so I would guess the eye color comes from whatever he is mixed with. I would say Weim or maybe a dobe but I don't know enough about either of those breeds to know if the green is in those breeds. |

My first instinct from the face and green eyes was a weimeraner/GSP mix, but several people already said that. I think it is probably Weim/GSP. Regardless he's a beautiful dog. Congratulations on the new addition. |

| Demetre - Puppies always have blue eyes when born and then they darken and look allot like your puppies eyes. Ultimately he should have brown eyes when he is mature. You can tell the color of the eye by looking at the outer ring of the eye. It should be a shade of brown and that is ultimately the color you can expect when your puppy is full grown. Some have the yellow hawk eyes and as I said in my earlier post that is a fault. |
