Is 14 hours too long with out food?

Kassi is almost 5 months and being fed 3 times a day. 8am, 2pm and 8pm. This has been working really well with her pooing twice between her 8pm feed and bedtime and managing to go all night with out messing in the crate.

Recently though (the last 3 nights) she has only done 1 poo before bed and then done another one in her crate in the night. the last 2 nights she has ripped the paper to pieces (half crate is bed, half is paper) and pooped on her blanket and then just made a right mess, all over the crate and her.

Today I am blocking off the crate (it's huge) to give her only a small (but big enough) space to sleep in and doing away with the paper. This might solve the problem of her pooing in the crate.

But I also wondered if feeding her at 6 or 7pm would be better than 8pm so she has more time to poop before bedtime. (even all though this has been the feeding schedule for every pup/dog i've ever had). But is 13 or 14 hours too long with out food? Shold I keep to the feeding schedule and see if the smaller area works?

What's your opinion please?

Isn't it amazing the question you still ask, even after being through it all before enough times.

I would feed her earlier. Our guys are fed at 4am, 4pm and 7pm. They rarely poop after the last meal of the day; typically it's one when they get up on the morning, one later in the day and one after their second meal. Hope this helps.

Puppies process food so quickly I would agree with Joce and feed earlier.

Bugsy gets fed at 6am and 4pm plus usually a small amount after we eat (leftovers)
He has always been intensely hungry in the afternoon and it doesn't matter if he eats breakfast later or not - he is always ready to eat at 3ish.

Although an adult dog and a puppy will process food at different rates - he poops 2x in the morning and once at about 5-6pm

Mine are fed at 6am and 6pm.... I know they poop first thing in the morning, but after that I have no idea! I would think 8pm is kinda late to eat "dinner"...

Maybe you're feeding her too much food per serving?

Ok so crate is now made smaller and new feeding schedule as follows....

8am - 12.30 - 5pm

Going to feed larger quantities in the first 2 feeds and less in the 3rd feed.

See how we go. Thanks everyone.

Consider at this age you could switch to adult food and feed twice a day, probably lesser amounts, too.
Pooping a lot may indicate more food beingeaten than absorbed.

I agree with pixie. I move mine to twice a day at about 5 months, sometimes sooner. I also feed adult food (all like stages). If the dog is pooping that much either it is too much food or there is allot of fiber in the food. My dogs poop twice a day and the poops are typically pretty small.

I don't think she's pooping too much. 2 small ones after breakfast and 2 small ones after dinner. Just that she started doing her second evening one in her crate at night.

I'll put her on adult food when she's finished the bag she's on. It's puppy and junior

I agree that feeding last meal earlier will help with that issue. If it continues, however, you may just want to set a "just in case" alarm and start beating her to it until her body adjusts. Limiting the crate should too. Bella was much happier in her crate at that age with less room.

We switched Bella to an all stages food at about 4-5 months. She is fed twice daily, and her evening meal usually at 6:30. She typically won't poop her dinner poop until right before bed which is 10:30 or 11:00. There are times that we are busy and don't get home until about 7 or 8. When we feed that late, she usually won't poop before bed and wakes me around 3:00 or 4:00 (We try to not do this if possible even if we have to take her dinner with). She also poops right away after breakfast. She probably needs to before, but knows she is going to get breakfast right after she goes pee and then out again after so she might as well wait
