Now that Summer is over, I would love to try and aid Bella's coat in restoring it's true liver color. For the most part, it has returned, but the top of her head that was the most sunbleached is still recovering from being mostly red all summer. Is there anything I can do to help speed up the process?
I have seen kelp in the food suggested on here. I already add a little olive oil to one feeding per day. Is the kelp simply for the fish oil. Could I just add a fish oil capsule (meant for dogs) in her food?
For next summer, are there any sprays that help prevent bleaching? I know from my horse days, things like that exist...and may even carry over as safe to use on dogs? I didn't think I cared about the bleaching, but her true liver color is so nice I really don't want her to bleach next summer like I allowed this summer. |

Bella's coat should improve now that Summer is over and her Winter coat is coming in. You can give fish oil. I give all my dogs fish oil, human grade, a couple at each feeding. Not sure about kelp. Haven't read anything on that. I'm sure there will be other suggestions. There's a lot of knowledge here. |

All of my dogs were orange-y in the spring, and a food change had a secondary effect of eliminating sunbleaching all summer. You can hand pluck out the orange hair. It should come out easily if you pluck only a few at a time. This is painless for the dog when done carefully. BTW I now feed Native brand dog food manufactured by Kent Feeds. |

I live in TX and fought the sun bleaching on my show dogs all summer with different sunscreens with not much effect. I started using kelp 4 years ago and haven't had much sun bleaching since. I have 2 that love to lay in the sun and absolutely no sun bleaching on either one which is good because one of them is my bitch that I am special ink. My boy still gets a tad of sun bleaching around his ears, but not so much it is noticeable by anyone but me. I get the pet product called Kelp Help and my dogs get a little less than a tablespoon mixed in with their evening meal. I have also switched out the olive oil for a product called shed relief because mine were really shedding this year and it did really help with the shedding and the cats look awesome. Really shiny and nice and thick and course like they are supposed to be. |

| I have not had that happen to my current dogs . I think its the pedigree lines are different and that is why . All the puppies and their puppies dont fade either . My first dog did get redish in the summer but it came back in dark when she blew her coat in the fall. This was true in all of her family tree.It could be the food with some dogs coats . I use Ez-groom products and use the black coat shampoo (warm water)on my dark boy with Self- Rinse plus on his legs with a fast cold rinse for shine . (been far east ) |

Thanks for the suggestions you guys. Her coat is returning, but the crown which was the worst is taking a bit longer. We spent the majority of our days in the summer outside and usually at the beach. I wouldn't expect a dogs fur not to handle the sun the same way our hair does. I just want to help speed up the process to returning if possible and then work next summer to not let it happen quite as bad. It's totally a vanity thing lol, it doesn't bother her or affect her in anyway...her natural coloring is just so much prettier @been far east - I have seen the black shampoos, but notice they often say not for use on coats with lighter colored areas. Have you noticed it fare OK on the liver spotted areas without darkening the white? I will try kelp and replace the olive oil with that. |

When we purchased our two, they were mostly outdoor, and their coats were lighter.....much lighter, and then when they came to live with us, they turned dark brown. However, I think during July/August or so, I noticed that Maybrie had dark areas, especially down her spine, but that the rest of her was turning light again. I freaked out, because her coat was so splotchy and not at all like it had grown to be. I KNEW the sun wasn't bleaching it because they weren't out a lot. I asked my breeder, and even went back to my breeder to find out what was going on. She said they shed (I forget if she said once or twice a year) and she told me how to speed up the shedding by just gently pulling at the hair, like you would pull on your own eyebrow hair. I started doing that, and the stubborn lighter areas went away! Now, she is the dark liver color again. Her beautiful color will come back. It took Maybrie's coat a ful 3 or 4 months to fully shed and look normal again. During those few months though, she looked like she had some sort of nutrient deficiency. At first I thought it was the doggie conditioner we were using! |

| I'm going to give Chris Christensen's line a go. I reread about the black on black and it said it can be used on a multi colored coat, but if you have white areas you should apply the white on white first (leaving the suds and then using black on black). Someone also suggested his ice on ice...which I think I will go ahead and get and try this Summer. I'm going to keep an eye out for the kelp help as well. I notice just how badly I let her sunbleach when she is around other GSPs her same tone of liver. It's returning to normal, though. |

Picked up some salmon oil today that I came across with really nice reviews. Tonight was her first feeding with that in place of the usual olive oil. I wasn't sure how she would take to it and at first she just stared at her food for a second and then looked back at me like "what...what is the meaning of this?" Then she went for a little sample and ultimately didn't stop after. I have never seen her on the "hunt" for more food after dinner, but she must have really like it because she has been looking for more for about 5 minutes now |

For anyone interested, I grabbed a couple of shedding blocks that our equine store had. I cannot believe I didn't do this ages ago. After using it on her head and back-end just twice today I have removed probably 50% of the sunbleached hair. I think if I do this daily within a week she should be free of most of the orange that I mistakenly allowed to take over her lovely liver color this past Summer. She also LOVES it. I was worried it would feel a bit too rough on her head for her, but she goes into an absolute trance while I use it. Especially on her back-end near her tail lol. Works great. Her head coloring is already drastically better than the photos I just posted in another topic. |
