  Hey y'all

i just bought my first GSP!!! His name is rebel and I pick him up oct 24 he will be 8 weeks old. I plan to crate train him right away but am still worried because I am a police officer and work third shift and my wife works days. He will get play and exercise time from about 4pm-11pm everyday. Can anyone offer advice or tips from personal experience about how to handle the situation of him being crated at night when my wife sleeps and then I will need to come home and sleep?!?!?!?!?!

I find these guys adjust quickly to routine. The first couple weeks may be challenging, but once he gets in the groove, he'll probably fit right in.

Welcome to the forum, and don't forget to post pix when you get a chance.

hi, Congrats on the new puppy. I don't have teh same schedule as you but my husband and i both work. We both are out of the house by 6am and the dogs are on tehir own from then till about 3pm when my husband gets home. For teh first few months instead of crating ginny ( our GSP) we gave her full access to eth bathroom. I wanted her to be able to relieve her self and still have room to lay down , play ect. We put down wee wee pads on one side of the room and set up her toys and such in the other. I removed all towels, bath mats toilet paper and anything she could get into. We kept this up until she showed she could hold it in until my husband got home.

For Night time we crated her and had her in our bed room next to our bed. She slept better that way. Im not sure what to do about after you get home and need to sleep. As soon as we get home shes on full speed and sleeping is just not an option. Maybe tucking him/ her out with a long walk and some play and then trying to get her/him to sleep while your napping. Good Luck!!

Congrats to you! So he will be crated when your wife is sleeping and then she gets up for work and you come home by then. You go straight to bed the minute you get home? Maybe stay up for a little, feed him, walk him and play and then he'll poop out and need a nap so you can go to bed then? Just adjust your schedule by an hour?
