I shared with many of you that last spring I had to have my yellow lab put down. This has left me with Asher (GSP) as a lone dog. I love having one dog so it's easier to take him places, but I hate it when I have to leave and he's home alone. I've gone back and forth the past few months on getting another dog.

well, today, a labrador retriever literally walked into my sisters house while unloading groceries. She put a picture on fb to try and find the owner. And sent me a picture since I'm the local dog person in the family. Needless to say, she found the owner or should I say caretaker. The son bought the dog, and doesn't have room or time for it, so his parents are keeping the dog until they find a good home. My sister told them I had come to see the dog and they said I could have him if I wanted him. He seemed to be a sweet dog and about 5 years old. He is an escape artist and I'm not sure what other habits he has.

I know this is debatable but he is a good looking fox-red lab with CKC papers. I've never adopted an older dog, I've always had a fresh trainable slate to start with. Asher is so well trained and smart that I'm worried about bad habits and training the 'possible' new/older guy. Any advice or experiences you could share?

I haven't raised a pup in years. All of my dogs have been adopted and usually ranged in age from 1 to 7yrs. old. My current dogs - Baron, now 9.5yrs., was 9mos when I adopted him, was big and totally untrained. It took some work, but he is a super dog now and well behaved - well, most of the time. ;-) Lucy, GSP now 3yrs. was 11mos. when I adopted her. Fairly well trained but needed some polishing, still doesn't have a good recall when loose, so I try not to let that happen. Shrek, lab,gsd mix, was 7yrs. when I adopted him and is now a little over 12yrs. He's what you'd refer to as a good ole boy, but was abused.

I guess it all comes down to making a decision based on what you can find out and know about the dog and go from there.. Hopefully, you can get some info from the parents of the who are keeping the dog now. Also, ask if you could have the dog spend some time with you to see if you're compatible.

Hope it works for you.

We adopted Velvet when she was 7 and is now 8. She has her quirks but Windsor never picked up any bad habit as he has his own quirks but Windsor is still Windsor and Velvet has become much better - took a few months. I'd say go for it :)

A friend of mine just adopted a one year old GSP/lab mix that clearly had the smarts, but had lacked proper training. I think her head she hoped she would quickly be the type of dog Bella is...and her new dog has been driving her nuts. I reminded her though she has a bit of an older (though still very young) dog, she has to remember she has basically a big puppy in regards to knowing things. They are making ground with lots of patience, and ultimately she says she is so glad they found her and felt like it was the right decision.

GO FOR IT if you feel like you have the patience should you need plenty, and if it feels right.

We brought Shiraz in when Bo was 2 and a bit. (She was 4.5 and had just had her second litter.) It was amazing the difference in him since she took over as alpha dog and he was more than willing to let her order him around. He's a lot more confident with her around than he was without her. If you think you can handle it, I'd say give it a shot.
