Living in Seattle, you think we'd be used to the rain, but after 3 months of solid record sunshine without a raindrop in sight and the rain that started up again 3 days ago seems like it's going to be a long winter winter season for us here....and the the one who's feeling it most is Luna. Wish our girl loved the rain as much as she does any other weather...she even loves the very chilly and cold snow we go exploring in...but the wet rain is another issue.

Saying Luna doesn't like the rain is a definite understatement, she absolutely despises it! Any attempt to use excitement and encouragement for her to go for a walk is a pure image of Luna on the couch whom can see it raining outside and giving us the look saying "really?!? you want me to go out in THAT! I don't think so. Ask me again when it stops raining". So to make it short we don't do many leashed walks in the rain, and mostly play inside, go a little stir crazy, go the park when we can which she is willing to do in the rain only if it involves chasing a ball, or opening our backdoor trying to get her to go outside to even just do her business.

I'm hoping you all may have some advice on what's worked to take your dog out in conditions they aren't fond of, or despise like Luna does would be greatly appreciated! Or any mental stimulation / or play games suggestions for indoors for our 2 year old Luna would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to stay optimitic to get thru this winter once again, and want our girl to stay happy as well. Or we may be having to send her to Grandma/Grandpa's house for "winter vacations" where it never rains on the other side of the mountains and only dumps snow. Oh, she'd be in heaven! If she could speak, I'm sure she'd be requesting that vacation in an instant!

Oh Luna, rain isn't so bad :(
I don't have personal experience with that issue, perhaps you could try something like the Ruffwear Track jacket or other coat that night help with keeping her drier?

Bella HATES rain. For a girl that loves water, she is a priss about rain. Yesterday we had high winds and rain and I KNEW she needed to poop. She will usually go on command, and it was her last out for the night. She finally thought she won the battle with a fake poop squat. It still cracks me up that she is smart enough to know that a fake pee squat won't suffice for the "go poop" command, but still doesn't seem to get that I obviously know a fake poop squat for one "solid" reason :)

She turns into such a lump in the rain. She just stands there like "ew....EW" tucks her tail, droops the ears. Suffice it to say...I have no advice. A jacket might do the trick as mentioned. Bella outgrew last years, so I still need to get another.

Hmmm...wish I could say a jacket would do the trick, but we have 3 jackets and it doesn't help :( Bella sounds exactly like what Luna does! I too send her out back in the yard to go pee/poop before going to bed, and I now have to make sure he really goes because she walk to the end of our deck if I'm not watching, turn back around prance inside and jump in her bed :) Guess it leaves us with hibernating!

The funny thing too is she loves water when it involves swimming and absolutely LOVES snow.

After reading these responses, it sounds as if my Lucy and dobe Baron would fit right in. They both hate the rain!!!!! I have not found anything, yet, that changes their mind as to the fact that they might melt if they went out in the rain. :-)

Is it worth maybe trying to get her nose excited? Whenever i see Keely's motivation flagging at the thought of going out in the rain (only happens when popping out for a last pee at night in the garden) i find that engaging her nose can be useful.  Maybe try a little strong-scented food bribery to lead her outside by the nose initially, then maybe lead her to a pre-planted smelly treat at the beginning of the walk/outside your house/in the street.  When their noses are engaged all other senses are more likely to fall by the wayside

Good luck

Thank goodness my Zoe loves the rain as long as there is no umbrella involved. It rains a lot down here and I knew she had to get used to it. Since she was little, I have always brought her out in the rain and played with her. I would throw tennis balls and play fetch with her. I also let her play at the dog park in the rain with other dogs. The battle for me is getting her inside out of the rain.

Are you having issues with getting her to go out to go potty or just the energy from not being able to play outside?

As for having to go potty... Blitz doesn't really mind the rain that much, Striker knows he would rather be inside... so if mine really have to go they will go out to go... they stay close to the house so the over hang protects them a bit... and then over to the side where they go under the pine trees... you might be able to put up one of those tent canopies so that there is a dry spot to go potty in...

As for energy... mine do get some what wound up when it has been raining all day, but they have been taught the "kennel" command which for them is basically go lay down on your bed and chill... they don't have kennels anymore... they will get up after a while and try to be annoying again but we just tell them again to go "kennel"....

As for regular activity on normal days we have never had any formal play time... we don't go on walks unless the kids want to go to the park or we are camping... used to take the dogs to the dog park, but Blitz only want to search and dig for critters and Striker has an annoying bark that I think bothers a lot of dogs... plus all the horror stories you hear about dog parks, so we stopped going... so basically our dogs entertain themselves on a regular day and don't expect us to do it... though they love it when we qare outside working all day...

Our two hate the rain also. I have to go out in the pouring rain with cookies just to get them to come out into the yard to go do "businesss" before I call it a night. If I didn't do that, they'd just sit on the porch and whine to come in. I walked them in the rain a few times a while back but they didn't like it.

weerubbertummy - Good suggestion with getting her nose interested...and I thought of the same thing. Tried anything from her favorite cheese to her soft food we take hiking, etc. but she's too smart and outsmarts us with the though I just see coming from her.. "I know you think you can lure me with this, BUT do you see the rain out there! no way am I going out in that". We got one stubborn girl on our hands. ha

Splat - If she needs to go out to the bathroom, she'll make a run for it out back and sprint right back inside. She wouldn't make an accident inside because of it. I just feel like I should try and continue our activity routine as much as I can despite the rain, but clearly Luna has different ideas. She would be happy and content on the couch all day honestly. She's one mellow girl, so she's happy anywhere we are, EXCEPT when out in the rain. I can tell she's ansy to get some energy out when she's still wide awake in the evenings after a long rainy day with minimal physical exercise, when on other days where she gets plenty of outside time she's asleep on the couch next to us at 7pm :) Thankfully she is still sleeping well thru the night regardless, and her actually sleeping in longer since it stays darker longer in the mornings. She doesn't have another furry critter to play with at home, unless we arrange a play date with our friends and their dogs, so our evenings end up my husband and I taking turns playing tug of war with her, hide and seek, etc. We're staying entertained to say the least.

I guess what I hear though from a lot of you is that Luna isn't the only one that doesn't like it, and maybe even as much as I try to convince her that the rain won't kill her, she will not be "un-convinced". Time to get creative indoors and all resort to a little bit more relaxation I guess. Thanks for all your thoughts again! I appreciate it :)

I too have good luck with my two in the rain.  We live in Houston, and we get a lot of rain.  I am not sure why they enjoy the rain other than the fact that they were raised  pretty much outside by their breeder until they were 5 and 7 months.   They don't like to go out if it's pouring, but a light rain is no biggie......they LOVE to run super fast and either slide or sjump hard enough to make a big plash in the puddles!  They will run full speed up to a puddle and run back and forth splish splashing as if they were two toddlers romping around.   Now if I could just find out a way to not get mud in the house when it rains, life would be grand!   It never fails, I mop the floors and it rains!  Our previous lab was terrified of the rain.  She would go outside if I went with her, but she would bark the ENTIRE time she was looking for a spot to go. She was literally saying, "PLEASE, DON'T LEAVE ME!"      Our have also been to the dog park in the rain, although we are NEVER going back after our last little episode of the bunny kill and then the worsening prey drive and desire for the chase using poor unsuspecting dogs and ganging up like a pack.....Never again!   I do LOVE the idea, and agree with SPLAT, it would be great if you could make a game out of it.   This may sound weird but my two LOVE to chase bubbles.    Perhaps one day, if it's not raining too hard, you can grab some bubbles and let them enjoy a game of chase.  Do this each time you go out in the rain so they will associate rain with having fun.  Eventually they will go out on their own without fear.  That's the goal anyway!  I will say that my two are getting a little more rain wise as they grow older.   As younger pups, they went outside eagerly regardless of  heavy downpour or light.  Now, they won't go unless it's a light shouwer!  They are not afraid of thunder though. Good luck!

Casey dislikes rain as well. I think it's the coldness and feeling of water droplets hitting him that he dislikes.

Some indoor games we do -

Put them in a sit-stay and then say a dozen other unrelated words before finally saying "here"

Balancing food on their nose, paws, etc.

Holding food in front of nose and giving food once direct eye contact is achieved, them prolonging duration of eye contact

Put in a sit-stay, we then hide antler or other prized object in a different room, and release them to find it

Heeling around coffee tables, chairs, etc.

Our boy's nickname is "Princess" since he hates going outside on wet grass. (Now show him a lake, or take his favourite chuckit ball out, and it's a whole different story.) I feel your pain. :)

Disliking the rain must be a shorthaired trait, as both of the Shorthairs that I have known hate the rain, and refuse to go out in it, holding their bladders and bowels until the rain stops.

Like others have said, they can play hours in a lake, river or even under the sprinklers.

I have never met a dog yet that likes the rain. That being said you have to get them interested in something out there if you want them to spend time in it. ( as stated above) The other day while cutting firewood the rain started & max was out there helping out as he usually does. ( always has to be part of the action) When the rain really started to pick-up I looked over to see him sitting on some pallets watching me cut & looking like a drown rat . But he was happy .
If all else fails to get them out try a golf umbrella ....

Mine don't mind the rain and go out in the rain, but then they stay out all day hunting squirrels. I have two that don't like thunder and they won't go out if it is thundering. I wouldn't worry about if she still goes out to do her business. Instead focus on inside games.

See, Bo loves to sit on the porch and watching lightening storms. The thunder doesn't bother him a bit.
