So when I was grouse hunting with Rowdy today and quail hunting the other day I noticed that when I blow two pips on the whistle as his recall command he stops right where he is.  It's obvious the whistle catches his attention and he stops.  The thing is, that prior to these past two times, he comes running back to me the first time I blow the whistle, I'd say about 90% of the time.  He definitely knows what the command means, but being a puppy it's still not a sure thing that he'll come the first time.  This new behavior of simply stopping when he hears it has me perplexed though.  He'll come the second time I blow the whistle after he stops, but I don't want to teach him that he can ignore it once  and then come the second time.  Should I just go find/get him after I blow it the first time, so I don't have to blow it a second time?  Or since he's a puppy should I just do nothing after he stops and let him eventually come back to me?  Any suggestions on how to help him understand that he has to come the first time are welcome.  I realize he's a puppy still, but I would still like for him to come the first time, if possible.  Thanks.

I really don't have the knowledge of this, but I would think this is where a check cord would be used... you give the whistle a blow and when he just stops thats when you get the end of the check cord and give it a tug or reel him in for the come... I think you can use the check cord while hunting...

I keep a check chord attached but don't hold it. The check chord slows him down just a bit and keeps his range at or under 100 yards. It is easier said than done to hold onto the check chord while hunting, as it will get caught on every bush, tree, log, rock, etc. The only time I would actually hold onto the check chord is if I was training him out in an open field. Otherwise it's nearly impossible in an actual hunting situation.

This is where an e-collar would come in. If he is properly collar conditioned, if he does not comply with the whistle command immediately (as in the case that he "Stops", but does not recall, then you would stimulate before you give the second command. Again, this is assuming that the dog IS collar-conditioned.

The stopping is the dog testing compliance. First, they recall after 2 tries, then (without any consequence) they tend to regress further. Now, some dogs may sense your disappointment, and this may be enough to stop the regression.... some it helps with check cord... I prefer to use an e-collar. Less questions, more immediate consequences, less regression (when used right).

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Thanks tgatto, that makes sense. I still need to get him and e-collar. I have a book on proper e-collar conditioning.
