hi, was wondering if any of you experienced this with your dogs. our girl jess (liver ticked) has a few large brown spots on her body among the smaller brown tickings. one in particular on her lower back has been feeling a lot more corse and stiffer then the rest of her fur. now i've noticed that there are a few small bald patches in that brown patch. she dosnt have anything like this anyhwere else on her body that we can see. is this related to diet? time of season? any advice would be greatly appretiated. thanks, tt

I've noticed that where Bo has scar tissue, the hair that has grown back is very different from what was originally there. Could that be a possibility?

My female had one large bald patch on one of her hips, but the vet said it was from friction of some sort,perhaps lying on that same spot in her kennel. Although her kennel was an appropriate size, we purchased an even larger kennel for her, and sure enough, it went away. That was about 3 months ago. There was no itching, no scaling, it just looked like the back of a baby's head that is placed on it's back too much and rubs the hair off! I know there are various types of mange, which is what I worried about, but it could be something else too. From what I read, there are a couple types of mange, one is mite related, and the other is stress related. Mange is common, and I think can be hereditary....not sure about that one though. I suppse there could be some sensitivity related issue as well. I would definitely pay a visit to the vet so they can get it treated quickly just in case. Skin conditions can be tricky, and a pain to get a handle on if not dealt with soon. I think I would also contact the breeder and ask if there are any skin issues that he or she knows of in that line of breeding. Good luck to you.

Is he sitting somewhere where his lower back rubs on something or even laying somewhere where this area rubs? That is what I would suspect based on the description. The other thing is he might be chewing on his lower back if he is getting into something makes that area itch. Not sure if he can reach it though. If it were allergies to something I would think it would show in other places unless it was something he is touching with that area that he is allergic to.

We had a similar issue balding spots, with coarser hair too - see this post - http://web.whc.net/GSPForum/tabid/220/forumid/2/postid/92690/view/topic/Default.aspx We have since changed back to our original food and it has been summer, so he has had more sun. The patches are now gone, but we will be watching through the winter.
