Baira is currently having surgery for a blockage. It's the first time she's had to have surgery to remove something she's eaten but I doubt it will be the last.
We have always had problems with her eating everything and anything so we are very careful to pick up as we go. But it has now got to a stage that we cannot even give her any bedding because she eats it. This time she managed to pull Leos' collar off and has eaten that! (they were left outside together in their run for les than 1 hour)
They are both walked (off leash so running) for 2 or more hours in the morning and then have a 20 to 30 minute leg stretch in the evening (again off leash). Some days they swim, some days they don't and we have about 10 different trails we walk so always something different. We have had the same daily routine for over a year now. Fed at the same time, walked at the same time etc. I don't work so am home most of the day. They are only crated at night and for the brief time I am out of the house for shopping or school run. I leave them with one of those puzzle treat toys if i'm going to be gone more than an hour as to keep them occupied.
There is no pattern to her eating stuff, it's very random. I would expect her to eat something if her morning walk had been shorter (happens occassionally) or she had been crated for hours but no, it's so random.
I'd say on average she's been at the vet once every 2 months over the last year (which is usually 5 or 6 visits with each episode) and before that it was once a month. It's always because she's eaten something and it's stuck. I don't begrudge paying it but I am not a bottomless money pit and there's going to come a time that I just won't have to the money in the bank.
And we do pick up everything we see but she somehow manages to find something. Or she picks something up whilst out running. She ate 4 stones last year, luckily they passed but she had belly ache for 3 days and had to visit the vet every day for a week. And she cracked a tooth on one of them so the vet had to remove it.
She's not underweight and occassioanlly leaves a little food in her bowl and goes back to it 10 mins later so she's not hungry.
So, I am at the end of my tether with her and think I will have to keep a muzzle permanently on her or i'm going to end up broke.
Has anyone got any ideas on what I can do? |

I do recall you mentioning that you muzzle her for this... I can not believe she ate the collar off the other dog, that one just boggles me! I think the term of what she does is pica... here are some links about it: http://www.liquid-vitamins-minerals-humans-pets.com/Picaindogs.html http://www.vetinfo.com/pica-in-dogs.html |

| vet assistant just called to say it's even more complicated as all her intestines are twisted too. Called twisted gut in horses so I guess the same thing. |

ah Ok. interesting on the colic thing. Horses can have belly ache which we call colic and that can lead to twisted gut if not treated quickly. I am just sitting here waiting for the vet to call me. Been a a few hours now. Don't know how long this surgery takes. |

| Oh Baira! Hoping the surgery is successful. Not sure what advice to give you aside from the muzzle. Hugs from afar! |

Sending prayers your way. I hope you hear some positive news from the vet soon. This is a hard one. I would use the muzzle for now. If it were one particular thing it would be easier, but because it is random that just makes it almost impossible to do anything about beyond the muzzle. I wonder is she might have some kind of vitamin or mineral deficiency. You might want to talk to the vet or an animal nutrionist and see if there is any testing they can do to determine if she has any deficiencies. |

Well, some good news....her intestines were not twisted as expected. He removed the remainder of the collar (which I get to keep) that was stuck in her stomach. Very tiny hole, he did well to keep the incision so small. She's home now sleeping off the anesthetic and we have to go back in the morning. Thanks for your good wishes. |

Binni seems to eat whatever she can get into when she is bored or over excited.
example: Yesterday her and Niko were "playing" and she got too wound up and stole a dollar bill off the entertainment center and ate half of it. An hour later- she threw it up!
today: I left her outside and ran downstairs to do laundry and when I called her in (5 minutes out of my sight) she ripped a piece of siding off of the house. An hour later- she threw up a rock!
She is now laying on the couch sleeping as if nothing happened. I swear she is alway one step ahead of me. SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY.
Any yes, we go for walks everyday. She has a nice fenced in yard to run as much as she wants and we take her running of leash also. She has every "tuff" toy that is on the market and we train everyday.
Hope she calms down SOMEDAY SOON... |

Wow, so glad she is Ok! No good suggestions re the eating of crazy stuff. I kind of thought pica was specific to eating particular non-food things (like the stones or I read about a woman eating laundry soap) not random things. I wonder if you only fed her in a toy or where she had to scavenge for her food it might satisfy her. I feed one meal a day where Bugsy has to work to get to the food or go around finding it, usually breakfast. If I just put it in the bowl he isn't that interested but if I scatter it or put it in a toy he's thrilled |

pica might be if they eat one type of non edible food... I saw a show where a woman ate toilet paper all the time and it was causing blockage... we gee duh I would think it would cause that... but I second what Bev said about testing for any vitamin or mineral deficiencies... rule out any medical reasons... |

Ugh. Another stay at the vets. We've been everyday for over a week now but today she's needed more x rays and more fluids via IV.
Yesterday she starting acting like something was stuck in her throat. Coughing, wretching, swallowing a lot etc. she also threw up some foam.
Her incision looks messy. It's leaking a lot of clear fluid and is swollen.
The X-ray showed a lot of gas in her stomach and bowl. An abnormal amount apparently. Anyone got any ideas? |

Oh poor Baira! and poor you! The foam can be from an empty stomach - especially if it was bile colored Hmm it seems odd that her throat would be bothering her - sometimes after surgery it is feeling scraped or irritated but I would have expected that immediately after surgery not days later. I suppose she could be reacting to the anti-biotics? I would also consider that her bowel was perforated, which I sure hope it wasn't Please give her a kiss for me, it breaks my heart when our fur babies are hurting |

| Thanks everyone. I feel so selfish at the moment, I've got a lot on my plate and am rather stressed. This is making matters worse for me and I just wish the vet would keep her until she's better. I have to bring her home for her sake though. She's a nervous girl and worries a lot and she scared to death of being at the vets so I can't leave her there. But when she's at home I'm constantly checking her and worrying. It's an extra thing on my mind when I have so much going on. I'm exhausted and could cry for England........and I don't do crying. |

| Hang in there and take it one step at a time. Poor Baira and you. I am sure she is much happier at home. I understand the extra worrying, it is so hard when our babies are sick. Just hang in there and you guys will make it through. Keep us posted on Baira's progress. |
