Patch has been favoring her left eye...visual inspection doesn't show anything...but she's walking around squinting. We haven't been in the brush in a few days, so I don't think it's outdoor trauma.

We haven't found a vet here in Montana yet, but got a few recomendations from co-workers...

So the question is... should we let her rest, or should we take her to an unknown practioner?

I almost think she's doing it for sympathy, sometimes I catch her playing with Huey with both eyes open...but when she comes up to me or the wife, she does her best Popeye impression.

I wouldn't mess with an eye. Have you checked the surrounding area? Maybe it's a certain position that hurts her.
You might also try a saline rinse, I buy the saline rinse from the contact lens section to rinse my dogs eyes if they look gunky.
She could have a small scratch, so I would definitely check it out at the vet. They have fluorescent drops that show if there is any injury

I agree. She could also have something under the lid that you can't see. I would rinse with saline and if it doesn't improve quickly after that, I would take her to the vet. Dogs don't pretend for sympathy.

They say discretion is the better part of valor...so we took her to the vet...who, after some staining and a florescent scope...determined there was no corneal damage, but some irritation, and thinks she may have whacked her noggin on Huey, or a wall, or our bed, or a door and has a concussion. Apparently, that can present with the squinty eye and a non-dilating pupil.

So we have some drops to help with the irritation and some meds to prevent swelling.

And I'm now looking for a GSP shaped crash helmet, for my somewhat clumsy princess.

Good to hear that there are no injuries to the eye, but sorry to hear it might be a concussion. Sending positive thoughts that Patch will be feeling well soon.

Oh my! Glad there was no eye damage - we had a near miss back in May!
Ouchie on the concussion, what a silly pup!
