What is the best way to go about teaching honoring point?  Do you just bring the dog downwind of the bird, behind the other dog and wait for them to go on point?  Quail hunting yesterday, Rowdy seemed to want to charge in ahead of my dad's GSP and then go on point.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Use Whoa command. Most dogs should start doing it on their own with experience. Whoa can help bring it along.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

The way we work on backing is to get two to four dogs and plant a bird in the field for each dog. With the dogs on a check cord, in a line about 50 yards apart work the dogs through the field. Bring the dog that's in the lead to the first bird and whoa him as soon as he scents it. The handler of the second dog will whoa his dog as soon as it notices the first dog on point. The handler of the third do will do the same as soon as his dog notices the second dog on point. After all the dogs are on point you can either flush the bird and shoot it or throw a dead bird and shoot in the air. Have the dog retrieve while the other dogs watch. Once the retrieve is done the second dog in line now becomes the first and leads the line of dogs past the first dog that got to point and retrieve. Once the line has passed the first dog to point this dog falls in and becomes the fourth dog in line. Repeat drill until each dog has pointed and retrieved. With two dogs just have them point and back every other time. This drill works very well and lets you work on several things at once. If this is clear as mud let me know and I'll try and explain it better.

Thanks oneal, we're crystal clear, that really helps a lot, thanks. Has your pheasant/sharptail season started yet?

Sharpie season started 1 September. Haven't seen many sharpies and have only bagged two. One nice thing is all are sharpie spots are full of huns so we've done better then ever on them. Pheasant season started 6 October. Big number of pheasants this year. Got 5 last weekend and 3 this morning. Limit is 3. Are those quail you shot wild? If so it must be pretty cool to have wild quail. Haven't seen any wild quail since I was a kid back in Missouri. Ducks and geese still haven't shown up yet. Hopefully an arctic front moves into Alberta soon and pushes some waterfowl down this way. Good luck with your training and hunting.

Nice to hear about the roosters, pheasant hunting in Oregon is hit and miss unless you head up by Washington.  Yeah the quail are wild, we have pretty good numbers of wild quail scattered all throughout the state.  These ones were 7 out of a covey of probably 70 or 80.  Second biggest covey I've seen in OR.
