Hi, I just signed up for this forum while doing research on shorthairs.
I grew up with a Lewellyn Setter and she lived to 13 years until a horrible spinal disease completely crippled her and she had to be put down as she was suffering to much. She was a great hunting dog and companion.
We decided that our next hunting dog will be a male German Shorthair Pointer and we want him around the next couple of weeks. We looked through breeder websites & online ads and have found a couple available litters. We like this guy
www.puppyfind.com/view_listing/
and we also found some show dog breeders who charge $1200 for a solid liver male, last one in the litter
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/696/img2231th.jpg/
I need some help deciding wich one to pick. We want a dog that hunts with good lineage, and aren't really looking for any show-dog but this guy (second pic) looks great and we might be willing to pay the $1200.
What did everyone here pay for their shorthair? is $550 (first picture) too cheap or is it a great deal. Which male would you recommend out of the two options.
I have the pedigree's and extensive information if anyone needs to see.
Thanks. |

Hi and welcome. It is difficult to pick a performance pup (one who is intended for hunting) based on a picture. Do the parents have any testing behind them? Is there a way to evalute the parent's natural ability and tractability? |

My advice would be to find a breeder who does the same things you want to do in the future with your dog. I wouldn't pick on pictures you found online. That may mean waiting til they have a pup available. Have a breeding and breeder behind you that will support you and be there for you for years down the road is priceless. Where are you located? The members of this message board may be able to help point you to a good breeder who will meet your goals and needs. Not saying either of those pups won't as they might but I would suggest meeting the breeders in person first. |

I'm in Toronto, Ontario Canada. it would be great if anyone can point us out to any breeders around that have available litters. We did a thorough online search for breeders and called them up, there are not many recent litters right now. The pictures of those two males are from recent litters we managed to find. The first one is 7 weeks and ready to be re-homed in one week (shipped to us) the Second picture is of a male that is 8 weeks and they are 1-2 hour drive from us. |

demetre there are LOTS of good breeders in and around Toronto. I would be happy to PM you some names or take a look at the GSP Club of Canada Web site.

Yeah we checked out that website. I looked at the Breeder's List for Ontario and we called them all up. Most of the listed breeders are not planning litters until December, and a lot of them are sold out, etc.
I searched extensively and these are the only two we narrowed down to, that we can get now. |

The price range you have been given sounds fine (although $550 does sound a bit low). What I would want to know is: health clearances, hunting history (of the parents) and how often they are hunted, what kind of exposure have the pups had to birds, what kind of contract does the breeder have you sign.
If you are comfortable with the answers to all those questions then, and only then, would I go to meet the puppies. If not, choose a breeder and wait until they have a litter available.
That's just my two cents. Good luck with whatever decision you make. |

| By the way, I don't think you could have made a better choice in terms of breed. Whatever your decision, make sure you post lots of pix of your puppy when you get him. |

| The advice you have received is great. Do your homework on the breeder you choose and ask lot's of questions. Remember this breed typically lives until they are 14 years or so, so you want to be sure you get the best and healthiest dog you can. I would PM everbell and let her connect you to a breeder in Canada, then talk to the breeders find out what they do as part of the breeding and whelping process to start the puppies out on the right foot, health clearances, etc. Once you find a good breeder, then talk about getting a puppy. If you have to wait, then I recommend wait because a good breeder is priceless and a fantastic resource. You will also be sure you are getting the best possible puppy you can get. As for the price, it varies widely by region. In TX where I live around a $1000 is about right for a well bred GSP pet, and show quality is usually a little more. All that said though, talk about the price with your breeder as they will often work with you if they like you and you are a good home for a puppy. Nothing is more important than finding a good home for the pups to most breeders. Expect for the breeder to interview you as much as you interview them. If they don't, then I would walk away. Good luck in your search, and when you find your pup be sure and post some pictures. |

Yes, I agree with Texas Belle. Check around. I too paid 800.00 for Kaido. Maybrie was free due to a previous injury she had sustained. My breeder will also repurchase dogs that are not great fits for the would-be owners, and she told me most reputable breeders will do this. She has had to buy back from people who are not as active as they thought they were.....even though she lets people know they HAVE to RUN and are VERY active dogs. She sort of interviewed us extensively in a round about way! We got Maybrie first, and upon seeing our lifestyle...although a bit more spoiling than most breeder/hunters/trainers are accustomed to.....she tries to give me just about every GSP she rescues! I want to take them all! When I have GSP withdrawal and can't get enough, I just go to her place! My two were bred, not rescued, but we got them at separate times, and as older pups...5 and 7 months. All I can say is, ask questions, go back several times, re-ask questions to make sure the answers are consistent, etc. Good luck! Enjoy your new GSP! Just know they are all different, just like people. My two came from the same litter, and other than the cuddle factor, could not be more different than each other! One is male, one is female, and both have their pros and cons. |

| Another suggestion would be to check the classifieds here and on other shorthair/gundog/versatile forums. (Not just saying because I have an ad right now.) Generally speaking, the better breeders aren't going to advertise on puppyfind or similar websites. If you are looking mostly for a hunting dog, look for hunt test backgrounds, navhda background or dogs that have gone through the German testing system. You can get an extremely well bred dog from parents with proven ability and health clearances in the $800-$1200 range. (But hint, hint, I do have a really nice male for sale in the litters section right now.) |
