We will be getting the new member to our family next weekend. We are very excited and nervous at the same time. She is going to mainly be an inside family pet, I have read alot over the last couple months both good and bad, I have seen on this site somewhere about a video set that has been recommended a few times for training, I would like to find them so we start out on the correct path with her and us as we all make this huge adjustments. We have never owned a puppy. We do not want to start things off the wrong way or do things to quickly.

Thanks in advance

Perfect Start and Perfect Finish, but both are for hunt training. Jon Hannah and his wife from Perfection Kennels did them. However, if you don't plan on doing any hunting I wouldn't recommend them. The best thing you can do is get your puppy into a puppy class and do allot of socialization. I would also recommend crate training, and the video Crate Games is great. I would also recommend asking your breeder for any suggestions and what she has done with the puppies. A good sight to look for books is Dogwise or Amazon. Read the reviews, then buy a few that sound good for your situation. Good luck, and can't wait to see pictures.

Congrats! Disregard my question on your other post asking if you were getting a pup or just considering at this time :) If you're nervous, that just means you want to do right by your pup and your family, so there's no harm in that. The biggest thing you'll have to remind yourself (as you mentioned making adjustments) is patience. I know it sounds silly...but sometimes I had to remind myself Bella was just a puppy because she was so darn intelligent there were times my expectations got a little too high as a result.

Patience, consistency (with all family members), routine, socialization, and obedience training are the components of a happy dog and a happy family. OH, and of course LOTS of love. Congrats again!

thank you for the replies, glad i ask the question. i did not realize those videos were for hunting only. I will look for something that is geared toward the basic training for puppies.

Ok, after talking to a few buddies that hunt and going out for a little while yesterday, seeing their dogs hunt was an amazing site. I may have a change of heart about being only a family pet, I may want to also have a hunting companion,I was getting goose bumps watching them work. So new delima, can I have the best of both worlds, family member/hunting companion? Should I go back with the recommendations of perfect start/perfect finish or start with some basic obedience training and then go to them at a certain age. Neither of my buddies have gsp's and neither one of them trained theirs. They have a lot more money than I do,so they just paid to have theirs trained, I can't do that. Now I am so confused on which route to go or what ate to even start all of the training.
Thanks in advance for listening and your advice

As with anything, some are going to have stronger drives than others. I am by no means speaking from any great experience here, but I was once told something that I have found to be very true with my own dog. Since she is simply a hunting companion for my husband, and no competing or field trials are in her future...we didn't initially focus on the hunting training. Not to say dogs who were introduced right away are less of family dogs, but I think allowing her to be a puppy and learn other jobs has given her a great ability to "shut off" the hunt mode when it comes time to settle indoors and be part of the family. Anyway, what I was told by an avid hunter with GSPs was "you don't have to teach a dog to hunt, you need to teach a dog obedience and expectations. The rest comes naturally." With her instincts and desire to please us...the hunting just fell in place. She's not perfect, but she also doesn't hunt hardcore. If we made it a point to be more thorough...I have no doubt she would be phenomenal.

So, my point is, yes I think you can have the best of both worlds. I have met dogs who seem to be able to turn off hunt mode easier than others...but I have never met a GSP who didn't love to be a part of the family at the end of the day, period.

Yes you can have a dog that can do both. That is what the Germans bred them for. I start mine out on birds early and also start obedience early too. So do both, but be sure you have fun with the puppy during training and let your dog be a puppy. There is plenty of time to do everything you want to do.
