Hubby caught his first elk!

The legs were leftover. Casey, realizing that he could not eat them all at once, hid all four legs the woods, digging a seperate spot for each one.

Two days ago, he brings a leg back. Hubby cuts it up, and the dogs enjoy it. Then Casey brings back another. Hubby puts this one away. Then he brings back a third one. This one gets put away as well.

Yesterday morning, Casey brings the fourth one back!

What a dog!

Rowdy is drooling with envy... I'm waiting for rifle season to open up, up here to hopefully get my buck and bull.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.

First moose caught last week!

Can't wait to make jerky and canned/bottled meat!

We are in Canada. The above was from a small moose, about 2-3 yrs old. The big game get big.

Unfortunately, far fewer pheasants and huns.

Ah that makes sense. I'm about as far north in the states as you can get before being in Canada, and we have moose but no elk.

Rose, how would you feel about sharing your canned meat recipe? Hubbs was hoping I'd do it with some of this year's venison. I've never done it and leery of internet recipes :) Haven't found anyone here yet who does it.

We follow the directions/recipes in the pressure canner manuals.

Opened up and ate four jars in the last couple of days. I am happy to say we are still alive. I personally prefer the canned/bottled moose over the elk. The elk is very, very lean. Hubby prefers the elk.

Thanks! I had my first this summer out camp. Someone visited and brought a jar. I immediately asked "what in the world is that stuff"...it looked just terrible from the outside looking in. Then I had some... I was SOLD.
