Just curious - how often do you wash or shampoo your dog?
I understand that washing too often can affect their natural coat oils? There comes a time where our hands get dirty from petting him, so we end up shampooing him about once every month or two. It'd be nice if I never had to do it.
I would love to know where everyone else is at... |

Much to Archer's dismay I try and give them a bath once a month (Zoe loves it). |

If it were up to me, I would bath Binni everyday! She gets so dirty digging everyday. She loves our bathtub! I catch her in there quite often. Binni gets a bath at least twice a month. |

| Used to wash our dogs about once a month, except during hunting season. With Sadie, however, we don't hardly ever wash her. She loves swimming so much, and we are at the lake twice a month, that we just never really get there with her (where she is dirty, or smells). Of course, she had 4-5 baths a day when she got skunked on her first hunt! |

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd |

About once a month in the summer due to mud, sand, and dirty lake water. Maybe every month and a half to two months in the winter. More so because she loves them, less because she needs them. She is a fairly neat and clean little Priss. |

Umm ... never? I've only ever scrubbed our guys when they role in something stinky. Other than that, I find they don't need to be bathed. |

| When they need it which varies unless they are showing. They get a bath before shows. |

| not very often... When I was not working I did it more often but now that I am working hardly ever... they got a bath before we left July 3 for our big camping trip and haven't had one since even though I said I would do it this week before our weekend camping trip... I am thinking they get them more quarterly! This breed is actually very easy to keep clean. We live on a farm and they roll in who knows what all the time. They have a doggie pool for summer so they do get wet several times a day...they just don't stink that bad or ever look that dirty... |

Brush? I just use my nails and give 'em a good scratching once in awhile |

| The fact that Bella has NEVER EVER smelt like a dog, wet or not, in and of itself is cause for getting another GSP when we're ready. (Not the most important reason, but a very good one none the less) LOL |

| And, I mean that not as a result of baths. Again, those happen mostly because she loves them, and there's no swimming weather for a larger portion of the year. Even after a long and super active weekend out at a camp... she smells like...well...usually pretty much odorless. If she gets wet, she just smells like her shampoo again no matter how long since the bath. It's like.... doggy magic... and I'm impressed. |

Interesting stuff! Do you guys/gals find that one gender smalls more "doggy" than the other? Casey is timid of water, rarely gets wet on his own. Although he licks/cleans himself frequently in comparison to our brittany. He has a distinct corn chip smell, the brittany(female), no smell. He also pees on himself frequently. I do find the baths make their coats shiny. |

| I don't have a male, but my Vizsla nephew dog does often have a lingering pee smell after going out. Another cause of Bella's baths, less so now, was a need to be expressed. Not sure of there is a difference there gender wise, but it is getting better with age! I just really shoved my nose in her coat and only picked up my husbands cologne from his lunch break nap with her lol. |

| Growing up with our GSPs my dad always stressed never to give them a bath during hunting season, since it got rid of oil that protected them from excess drenching from water, especially for waterfowling. Now with my own pup, I've recently stopped giving him baths, since it's hunting season. I'm fortunate in the fact that he has an amazingly smooth coat and my hands are excessively dirty yet. They probably will get dirty come December and January, but since his coat is so smooth, I want a little oil built up to protect him against the frigid winter weather or Central Oregon. |

| When I was going to the dog park, they got a bath DAILY!! Not even joking. They romp and roll in mud, jump in the murky pond and roll in more mud. Since they sleep with my daughter, I didn't want that junk going to her bed. To keep their skin moist, I used conditioner EVERY TIME I bathed them. Their skin never got even close to dry or flaky, so I never worried. It has been almost 8 weeks since we have been to the dog park, and they have had ONE bath! It makes a difference where they romp and roll, but I'm not opposed to daily baths! Living in Houston, it never gets frigid....not like up north! Also, we don't hunt with them. They are pets. We have TONS of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, squirrels, rabbits, etc. in our own back yard that entertain them for hours! The dog park was 400 acres of continuous stream of wildlife for them to chase. I wish I felt safe taking them back to the dog park. They truly loved it. |

By brush I mean a rubber brush meant for the bath, I forget to do it so he only gets a 'zoom groom' when I notice he's shedding . What's that like 2x a year? I am sooooooo glad he really needs no grooming, although his nails get dremmeled 2x a week in an attempt to keep them reasonable. Then again I keep my own hair short and doable in 5 minutes or less I am not the right owner for a dog that needs grooming |

| I've washed our dogs every few months but they really don't need it unless they are shedding a lot and ever since we switched them to food with Salmon in it, the shedding is gone. If it rains, they go in it and I dry them off. Windsor is great in the tub but Velvet is just too hard and too strong to get in the tub and neither like the hose or the pool. |

I feel better now knowing that one a month or two, or less, seems norm. With the amount that he licks himself, maybe we will cut it down even further for winter. Ha, maybe it'll give me a chance to wash his bedding! Most of the mud & water seems to just fall off of the GSP. Our Brittany has the coat of velcro. She requires rinsing after every muddy walk because the mud forms clumps around the hair on her toes, pulling the skin red. And in the fall, the burrs! Cutting 50+ burrs out after a walk is not uncommon. I met a dog once with the shiniest black coat. The owner said her secret was Head n Shoulders. |
