I just finished working 5 nights in a row, and so my dogs have not been able to run.  I took them tonight, and per their history of easily and quickly overheating to 105 in a 20 minute run, I decided to hoses them down as was suggested.  It was rather cool out tonight.....for Houston, Tx...68 degrees, so I didn't carry an extra mister, but they were soaking wet when we started out, INCLUDING their harnesses.  They both ran hard for 5 minutes as usual, but loped  at a good pace for a good 15 minutes.  As SOON as they started trotting, I brought them in....also per everyone's suggestion, as they are only 11 months old, and I don't want to over work their joints.   Both were panting ont he run, however, once on the doorstep awaiting entrance to the house, BOTH stopped panting!  Once inside, they proceeded to play together!  No more collapsing and the tile floor panting like crazy!  I took both of their temps, and they were 102.4   PERFECT!!     That's the trick........and also the reason the didn't really run long and hard......it's too HOT here in HOUSTON!   Come on cold weather!   Thanks again for all your suggestions!   I LOVE this forum!  My pups thank you all too!

Glad it worked, but remember the temp was 68 too. When we get back to summer next year and the temps are in the 80s at night they might heat up faster. But for now, glad it is working for you.

Dave -Trust me, that feels really cool when it hits 105 during the day. Thankfully we won't see that until maybe mid July next year.

Yep....it wasssss  68!  It's back up.  My husband and I wet them down again tonight, and took them earlier than usual.  It was 83 at 6:30. We rode for 10 minutes, at a pretty  good speed, and then slowed.  We stopped at the park ran them under the sprinklers and attempted to give them water.  They both refused the water.  We saw someone we knew, stood and talked for about 10 minutes, then headed home.  I didn't temp them when we got home, but they were still wet and they were not panting as hard.  They did flop down on the tile though, but only for about 5 minutes.  Maybrie has got some "get up and go" to her step!   Kaido is a bit lazier!   Have to remember he was out of commision with his broken toe for 4 weeks.  Gotta take it easy on him!   I still wrap his toes when we go running....just in case!  I think wetting them down is KEY to keeping them cool.  I time the biking for exactly 2 hours after they have had a good long drink.  That may be why they are not thirsty on the run.  They also have to stop 2 or 3 times to potty...or worse, poop in the street!
