Hello all, I am new to the forum and decided to post an introduction to our first GSP puppy.  We have both owned dogs all our lives, but were very excited in choosing a GSP as our next breed :) Manuel goes mountain biking, and we both play softball at least once a week, so we try to stay active and the GSP sounded perfect for us.  Luna was born on May 26, and she came home with us on July 21.  The passed month or so has been a wonderful learning experience and we are very pleased to have brought her into our lives.

I have a couple of questions to ask all of you, as this is my first experience with GSPs, some behaviors puzzle, as well as entertain us, and we are wondering if these are specific to the breed.  Luna is EXTREMELY vocal, and all other dogs I have owned make noises only when completely necessary.  When she eats, she begins to whine and "talk", as if the food of so good she cannot contain herself.  She also "grunts" when she is asleep and stretches or changes positions (she also is constantly dreaming).  We initially thought this was because we would hold conversations while she slept, and she was complaining about the noise interrupting her nap :)  She sleeps with her paws straight up in the air, and seems very comfortable in that position.  She also slides off the couch and onto the floor upon waking, and proceeds to do a back-arching cat stretch as she walks over to her water bowl.

The only thing I am dreading is getting her used to being away from us.  For now, she does sleep in our bedroom, and throws a fit if we leave her alone.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to start training her to be apart from us, that would be much appreciated.

Also, there is so much conflicting information as far as when to spay a puppy.  We definitely want to have her spayed, but i really don't know when that should be done (I have never had any of my dogs altered before).  So any advice on that would be nice :)  Thank you so much for your help and all the wonderful information and stories in this forum!!

Welcome! Luna is a pretty girl and it sounds like she has adjusted nicely to her new home. The behaviors you described are not unusual to the breed. I laughed because you could have been describing any of my dogs. The vocalization will likely subside some once she grows up a little. The rest will probably be around forever.

As for spaying, I recommend to my puppy buyers that they wait until after the girls come into season the first time, and for boys I recommend they wait until 1-1/2 to 2 years old. There are a number of threads that discuss this at length so I recommend you read those discussions.

As for working on separation I would start slow and leave here for short periods, and build up the amount of time you leave her. If you haven't crate trained her, I would also recommend that too. Don't make a big deal when you leave or when you return. Also, when you return don't go immediately to her. Do things like put your purse, keys, whatever up first and then got let her out. She will throw a fit at first, but ignore her and she will figure it out. Whatever you do don't let here out or talk to her until she is quiet.

If you haven't already, I would also star obedience training with her.

Welcome! Our Luna, will be 2 years old this October, welcomes your adorable Luna! Love the name you picked :) She looks like an absolute darling girl! How old is she now and what part of the country do you live in? Ours is the 1st GSP for my husband and I, and it's been a learning adventure but you have definitely found a great forum network that has been so helpful to us as well! We're still learning every day, and I love hearing about what everyone is doing and seeing pictures of their GSPs :) Our GSP is our family dog, and she's also our only baby at the moment so she comes with us everywhere and is a huge people lover! You'll find that out quickly about this breed. A lot of the little habits your girl has sound very similar to what we experiences too, and I'd feel assured that they're completely normal. Our girl however has never been very vocal. We didn't even hear her bark until she was around 7-9 months old, and still rarely does. Whining and whimpering in her sleep though is a norm in our house :)

Biggest thing I would encourage you to do that has helped us tremendously with our Luna, whom we got just around 9 weeks old, is really establishing a routine/structure that seemed to at least help us greatly throughout the puppy stage and beyond. One thing I would have to agree with Texas Belle, would be to definitely enroll her in some puppy obedience/socialization. I wish we had done that more with our girl and hopefully would've given us a better start to good leash walking skills and good socialization too! Crate training, was new for us with our Luna but also proved to be a life-saver for us. We initially tried to establish a confined space during the day that was gated, but quickly learned that very active puppies, especially ours, loved to chew anything wood so we quickly nicked that in the butt and I really think it helped her and us having a wire crate that we could adjust for correct size as she grew giving her "her space" where she felt comfortable and wouldn't encourage any bad chewing habits. We crate trained until Luna was 1 year old which was our goal until we could fully trust her in the house when we're gone, which she does great with now. She did really well at night from early on, and was allowed to sleep in her big cushion bed that sat next to her crate in the living room. You will quickly learn as time goes on what works and doesn't work for your girl :)

For now, enjoy the puppyhood stage...it goes by so quickly and welcome again and please keep the pictures coming. She's a cutie!

Hello Texas Belle and Lucie!!  Thank you so much for your welcomes and responses.  I live in Southern California (LA), where we have the opportunity to take our dogs to the mountains, beaches, and deserts as well as the city.  Lucie, i see you're in Seattle, one of my FAVORITE cities, and Belle, unfortunately i have not been in Texas outside of El Paso.  I look forward to getting to know you and your pups. We are definitely getting her into obedience classes, as well as working very hard on socialization (taking her with us almost everywhere we go, getting her to meet as many dogs as possible).  As i type this, she's actually going pretty crazy, so i need to take her out to the park and exercise her!!

Don't judge TX by El Paso. LOL. Definitely not the best part of TX. I live in Austin and it is right on the edge of the hill country and has lakes all around. The lakes are down right now due to the drought, but still pretty country.

I love S CA, but really prefer San Diego to LA. Do love your mountains and the wine country.

Welcome!  She's adorable!  I LOVE the wrinkles on the forehead!  My female 11 month old still has her wrinkles!  I don't think she will ever grow into them!  Lol!   We are new to the breed as well, and inherited both of them a little older than normal......5 months for Maybrie, and 7 months for Kaido.  Both are littermates, and I had them both spayed and neutered with no difficulty at all.   They were already kennel trained and partially potty trained, so can't help too much in that arena.  The character....what you are describing is GSP!  One of a kind!  The vocalization, some are just more vocal than others.  Neither of mine are as vocal as I would like, although Kaido whines when he's bored!   You will learn more and more about Luna as the days and months continue, and you will enjoy every  step of the way.....well, unless destruction is the result...expect bumps, bruises, and a bit of destruction! All part of the breed.....as I am discovering!   Enjoy, and again WELCOME!

Hello gsplover, and thank you for the warm welcome! Your pair is adorable!! We have lost some phone chargers so far, but no real damage...yet!! I have a 9 year old lab that i raised from puppyhood, and that was pretty rough, and i am anticipating the same for this little girl. She starts her training classes next week, we are very excited about that :)

Welcome Welcome! I am sure you have gotten some great responses to your questions so I apologize if I fly in on a redundant plane :)

Our Bella Mae is not very vocal in the barking sense. Though, she is finding her voice a little more with age when she feels it necessary, but that is still limited to one or two barks, and a grumble. I have noticed her to use her alert barks and grumbles more when my husband is out of town or if I am in the shower. Amazes me how she seems to know the main protector isn't home or when we (me) are more vulnerable. BUT, the groan...so very common. Many confuse it for a growl. GSP's and other Pointer breeds I have met all seem to have the sleep/tired groan. B also whinnies sometimes while eating, and it seems to be when she is inhaling her food a bit too fast (she used to eat WAY fast as a puppy and has slowed down significantly with age...but every now and then will REALLY mow down like the old days).

B is just finishing up her heat cycle. After MUCH research and asking around we decided to wait. She will be spayed now in a few weeks. It truly seems to be a 50/50 debate, and even one of the vets (not our regular) at the clinic we go to attempted to make feel pressured into scheduling and not waiting. I also took her to the local animal welfare shelter so she could meet a female pointer mix my friend wanted to adopt...and though they encouraged me to bring her...they all looked at me like I was scum because Bella was in heat and hadn't been spayed yet (granted I understand their point of view simply because of what they deal with each day).

Like Lucie said, B is our baby...she is our "child" as we are a "young" couple and know we are still too selfish with our time and finances for kids. The only time she is not with us is during work (and is spoiled Summers and A bit of winter with me as I work seasonally). When I go back to work, there is usually heightened anxiety until she settles into the new routine. The keyword there is routine.

Socialize socialize socialize as much as you can right now. Enjoy those wrinkles! I sure miss puppy wrinkles :)

Hello everbelle and smatulewicz!!

smatulewicz, how old is your Bella? She is adorable :) I love your avatar pic, I see she makes a great subject for photos! I wouldn't call myself a photographer, but i LOVE to take photos, and i see that you do it professionally...LUCKY. We, ourselves, are not yet into our 30's, so your last paragraph would apply to us as well!! I have been on disability for the last month, and Manuel (my BF) for three weeks of that month also, so she has become spoiled with us being home for her short time with us so far. We are trying to get her to meet all types of different dogs, but the problem is she is very vocal around them, and they (or more so their "parents") think she is being hostile with her barks and grumbles. She's just a baby, so she means no harm, she just has a very strong drive to play. Where to you keep her when you are at work? Is she crate trained? I really need to start crate training Luna, so she can stay home while we are at work instead of having to take her to my in-laws every morning :oP But she does get to spend time with their beagle and 2 bichon frises.

Bella will be a year in 10 days *sniffles*...such a big girl. I changed my avatar recently to her puppy pic because I was feeling sentimental lol. She's still a fairly petite thing. She was the runt. She is a good size and weight though at about 50 pounds. I am a school photographer which is why I'm spoiled with teacher's hours, and I set my own hours during the off seasons so it is a very nice gig...I can't complain :)

Bella was crate trained from the very beginning. I would encourage you do that now as she will only be more confused by it the more freedom she has in the house. She slept in her crate at night (willingly) until the past couple of months, and was crated while we were at work. We decided to start building up to being left out as she had a lovely habit of taking her boredom out on her dog beds in her crate..and found she does much better out of the crate (though, ONE couch pillow would argue otherwise lol).

You will find what works best for you guys and your dog, but it is always nice to have a dog used to a crate regardless of what your daily situation will be. You never know when it may come in handy (traveling as one good example).

I can't help much on how to tone down the vocalness with other dogs because I didn't experience it and never have. I'm sure others will have some great suggestions!

Hello Maraezee. Thanks.  I am a proud mommy.....I haven't done classes yet.  I know we need to . So far they have done very well with our training, but very definitely need MORE!  Looking forward to  the coming years with these two!

@Smatulewicz......I feel the pain!  My two will be 1 year on 9/20/12.   It's a wonderful day, yet a sad day too...puppy days are coming to an end.  My boy, Kaido is hilarious.  He is HUGE, 75 pounds and clumsy as anything.  It's almost weird to see this massive dog running at you, but with the puppy prance!  He still prances!  Maybrie runs, no more prancing.  She is smaller, so it is a bit weird seeing them side by side.  Kaido could actually stand to lose a bit, as he is still eating the same amount, 4-6 cups per day, yet has been crated more due to his broken toe.   Though you can still see his ribs, and he doesn't look fat from behind, he has developed a nice fat pad in the center of his chest. I call it a love handle!  I am looking forward to being able to REALLY run him again on a regular basis so he can slim down just a tad.

Bella will be 1 on the 15th! It's amazing how their bodies change so quickly. I can't even believe the amount of muscle Bella has seemed to have lost these past two and half weeks of lower key exercise due to being in heat. She typically gets a good 1.5 hour off lead romp in the woods daily (She loses muscle I gain a few LBs from lack of my daily hikes too lol)...or a full few hours of swimming at the lake. SO, back yard chuck it and frisbee just haven't been doing her justice lol.

I know....They can be fat or skinny in a matter of minutes sometimes!!  Lol!  I feel your frustration with the heat.  I am SO tempted to take mine to the dog park and let them run where they can cool off in the pool if need be, but I'm so afraid of other crazy dogs attacking mine, I just can't bring myself to do it.  Kaido's toe is still not heeled....not sure it ever will be, as I cannot keep that boy down for anything!!   I cannot wait for cooler days so we can bike a little longer than 20 minutes!
