my gsp is a little over 5 months old and he is learing really quickly but today when i took him out for a run he chased out 7 woodcock and a ruffled grouse in about 45 minutes. he has been introdused to gun fire and will retreve on  land and water to hand. this is my first gsp and i would just like to know if i should introduse whoa. or should i just wait till he gets older.

That depends. I usually like to teach Whoa in sequence with Sit, Come, Heel, and then Whoa. All of it on the leash, or check-cord. 5-months is plenty old enough to start to learn, but I would not expect him to whoa within the distraction of birds at close range. However, his pointing instincts will be enhanced with the birds, provided he doesn't actually catch any, without any Whoa training at all. Pointing is instinctual, and is re-enforced to be steady by the Whoa command.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

^^tgatto, I completely agree.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.

Not sure what the problem is?

He's got a nose and knows how to use it.

If you want him to hold point longer keep introducing him to wild birds and consider
a more controled environment where the birds are in launchers and released by you as soon as he switches his ear.

I don't like to use whoa when teaching manners around birds.
