Hi all, I'm new to this website so forgive me if I post this in the wrong place. My question was if I should force fetch train my Gsp puppy she is 7 month old right now and a great dog she will fetch(not to hand but we are working on it) but she seems more interested in the treats I give her when she brings it back, (i have started to wean her off of them) she will also get bored of fetching after a handful of throws and just chase it and leave it there (she always wants to chase) so I was curious if a force fetch program would be good for her, I want her to be a good retriver and to trust me when I tell her there Is a bird down. But I have heard that harm can come from force fetch so I thought I should ask what you guys think. Also I heard that if done properly it could make a puppy more confident, which would be nice because she dosent seem to be very self assured.

Hi and welcome.

Before I take the object from the dog I like them to look up at me and make eye contact, I then take the object and treat. I wean off the treat early on and give a "good dog" with a pat.

There are many benefits from force fetch and I believe FF is right for every dog - but not every owner.

Dead birds may ignite her passion for the retrieve.

I like SmartFetch by Evan Graham.
There are others out there - Lardy,Hillman are a few.

If you are not confident in your ability then seek out a pro that has successfully trained FF in several dogs.
