Has anyone ever used Bitter Apple Spray to deter chewing?

I have been using it to keep Kaido from chewing his bandage, and though I have to reapply it a few times a day, it has worked better than anything else....including two cones that he managed to chew off to get to his bandage that he ATE!    He sort of got the point a bit quicker when he started licking, and I told gave him a firm, "NO!" and then sprayed his paw.  Now he runs when he sees me coming with the spray, but he has left it alone.  My question is this.....has anyone ever used it on puppy bedding?  If so, how long will it last?  The bottle has NO instructions on it.  In general, they are not chewers, however, if they are bored one night, or day in their kennel, they will chew their beds. Unfortunately, I never know when that's going to happen!    Interested on other's opinion or suggestions.  Beds are quite expensive!  GSP's are expensive enough on their own!!

It has not worked for me. I have found that if my GSP is bored, he turns into a chewer and you have to hover over him to keep stuff from being destroyed. He chewed through the wire that runs my fountain twice before I finally buried inside PVC. When he chewed it the second time, I used bitter apple and he did not care.

It has never worked on stuff for me... and I used it on my prior dogs not mine I have now as they have never had chewing issues... if they chew the bedding sometimes I wouldn't put any in with them, better safe than sorry... they really won't notice the difference in comfort that much especially if they are young...

Never worked for my guy. The funny thing is, the crate is the only place he DOESN'T chew on his blanket. When he's bored or cranky he'll go into his crate grab his blanket and chew it on the floor :)

wish I could tell you we've had success with it, but we haven't. It never stopped Luna from licking or chewing anything that was sprayed with it. Best thing was to try and find something else to occupy her time. Hopefully Kaido outgrows his bed chewing stage sooner than later!

I have had success with a similar product - Windsor gets allergies and I think it's from the humid summer we have had and he is outside a lot. I bought Allercaine for dogs (antiseptic, kills bacteria and some worms, has lanacaine in it) at the petstore to spray on his paws that would get inflamed. He would constantly lick them and it drove me nuts. His paws would get all red and swollen in the webbed part. That stuff has Bitmin in it which makes it taste bitter (I know as I sprayed some on my hand and licked it - yuck). Stopped him from licking his paws and the allergies are all gone.....until the next time he gets them :)

Well......It WAS working! He tore off the bandage yesterday. I think the key for him is exercise, but how are you supposed to exercise a GSP with a broken toe? URGGGH!

A couple of suggestions that may work for you. If you have some duct tape try covering the bandage with it. Will make it harder to chew off. The other option is a dog boot.

Try a habanero/water mixture. Crush up 4 habanero peppers and fill a spray bottle with water and the crushed habaneros. Let soak for 2 days, shaking vigorously twice per day, then spray whatever you don't want them to chew. In your case you won't want to spray their beds with it, as it could get in their eyes (bad news) but if they are chewing table legs, chair legs, furniture, fences, et cetera it will work wonders. Guaranteed 100%.

That's a GREAT idea!  I have duct tape. Actually the vet suggested it instead of the vet wrap!  She said it was stronger and more difficult to chew off as well.  We just hadn't thought about putting it OVER the vet wrap.  Thought his foot might get too hot!

That's a great idea too, Duck Fever.  Fortunately, ours don't chew anything other than their beds.....and bandages!

I will keep it in mind though!
