I have a almost one year old male GSP.  He is out of hunting stock.  He has no hunting drive at all.  Has been exposed to numerous live birds and shows no interest at all.  He doesnt like to leave my side when out in field.  He will run and play with my boxer when we are home.  Could there be a medical issue that is causing this lack of drive.(Vision or diabetic) Should I keep trying to make him a hunting dog or just a family pet?  All ideas welcome.  Thanks

Have you hunted behind the parents?
Do the parents have documented titles?
How are the littermates performing?
Was the breeder advertising hunting dogs?
Did you buy him for the purpose of hunting?
What is your eperience with hunting breeds and training?
Have you contacted the breeder about this issue?

What type of training have you done with him and how do you work? He could be sticking by you because that is what you've expected in the past

His parents both have their master hunters title. He has been out on numerous occasions with both a Brittany and a GSP. He will only runs about 50 feet before he comes back. He also seems extremely nervous when he gets far away. He has been exposed to live pigeons and quail and doesn't so any interest at all. He is a great family pet. He will not retrieve anything or so any interest.

Perhaps something has him scared. How about if you try to get him revved up with one of your birds. Tease him with it a little . Try to get his mind in a different place. Did he get yelled at or corrected to heavy with an e-collar while training ? These dog's are tuff but soft also & I think that is because they try to please . They are very smart little buggers !

He has never had a e collar on. No heavy correction at all. I am not a serious bird hunter by any means. I just would like for him to be more out going. I have walked him up to staked pigeons and shows no interest at all. The only time he goes on point is at the neighbors wienie dogs.

I think I would back up a bit and reintroduce him to birds just like it was his first introduction. I would use quail and not pigeons as some dogs just don't get excited with pigeons. My male, Ringo, knows the difference between a pigeon and a read game bird and his points show it. Anyway, take it slow an hold the wings so he doesn't get hit in the face with a wing. let him sniff, etc then when you think he is interested let the bird fly and let him chase it. I would repeat that allot to build up excitement. I would also take him in fields and let him explore. Don't call him back to you, let him build his confidence and have fun. If he doesn't seem to be getting excited about the birds, I think I might let him catch one. You could pull some flight feathers so the bird can't get away. Also if you know another dog that hunts, get the owner to bring his dog and let them work a field together. Just be patient and let the dog go at his own pace and make sure you don't put pressure on the dog, correct the dog, just positive reinforcement. He will get there. Some dogs go through insecurity phases and you just have to work through them.

I definitely agree with TB. Also, contact your breeder as they are most familiar with your particular line of dogs. Good luck with your buddy.
