Yesterday I brought home a new male gsp who is 4.5 months old, and I already have a 1 year old female who is very submissive, but gets very excited to play with other dogs.  I got our new male from the same breeder that our female came from a year ago.  He seemed very socialized at the breeder; playing with other dogs and showing no aggression whatsoever.  When I brought him home he would show aggression by growling and pouncing on my 1 year old female, who immediately submits.  This seemed to happen everytime my female would be excited around him and try to play.

Is this behavior typical?  Could it maybe be because he was stressed in a new environment and was also scared?  I'm guessing that he is trying to be the dominant dog in the pack, should I just let them work it out, or should I step in as the alpha in the family and not allow the agression?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

I can't speak to the pup issue as I'm very new to GSP's; however, I have had dogs all my life - dobes for 40yrs. in a mutli dog household. I always have the last word when it comes to behavior, and I, personally, would not allow the pup's behavior to continue without correction.

If very well could be because the pup was in a new environment. Give them a chance to get to know each other before you throw them together to play. Take them walking together, put them in crates next to each other. I don't think I would make a big deal of the behavior, especially if you don't see any blood. At 4.5 months old your new dog is still a puppy. If it bothers you, you can separate them a tell him easy, but I would not fuss at him just yet.

My GSP is 10 months old and my english springer is 7 months old. They have been together for 5 months and still "fight" daily. I used to get so upset over it and pull them apart. Now, I have taken a step back and let them figure it out. Although they still have their moments, they are now playing together EVERYDAY. I guess it just takes time.
Hang in there! It does get better! (thanks again Texas Belle for all of your fantastic suggestions and guidance)

I agree with TB and PB, he's still a pup, but I wouldn't let it continue if TB's advice doesn't work (although I think it will, it's just a matter of them getting to know each other).
