Hi everyone, I just made an account here so I could make this post.  I adopted my puppy about a month ago from the K9 shelter I was working at.  He came in as an unwanted 8 week old "black lab mix", however recently I'm becoming more and more convinced that he is a black GSP or at least a large percent GSP.

Here are a few reasons why I believe he is a GSP:

  • First and foremost, I've gotten him to point on numerous occasions!
  • His tail isn't the "beaver tail" that labs develop, it's long and skinny.
  • If he's a lab he's going to be a small one.  At 8 weeks he weighed 12.1 pounds and at 10 weeks he weighed 14.3 pounds.  He's currently 12 weeks, but I haven't weighed him recently.
  • His nose!  Everytime we're outside he sticks his nose into the wind and sniffs like no other.  He manages to find hidden rabbits, squirrels and bird feathers like crazy.
  • I've been looking at pictures of black GSP puppies online and i swear some of them could be my puppy.  They look absolutely identical.

Here are a few pictures of him:

Pointing (his front right paw was off the ground just before I took the picture):

These are a few images of black GSP puppies I found online that look EXACTLY like him:

This is an adult that I could see him becoming in a few months:

Hi! Could be cuz you never know when you get a mix. Real short hair? I did have a black lab and he looked a lot like your pup.

The world may never know...but he could definitely have some GSP. I see GSP in the snout and tail. Though, the fur looks a bit thick and long for full bred GSP (especially on the tops of ears). But, if you're getting a point...there is definitely some pointer of some type in him, as I've never seen a lab point :)

In any event....he's super adorable, and congrats on him as your new addition! What a sweet face.

Could be ? The picture of infant (pup) on camo pillow & the one above with you holding . if someone said here is my GSP pup I would have to say he was a gsp.

If you really want to find out, many pet stores sell a product that is supposed to tell you the genetics of your breed.  It's around $50, and you don't have to draw blood or anything, it is just a cotton swab in the mouth.  Google search "Dog Breed DNA Test" and there are several options.

Maybe a mix, but the fur in those pictures looks way too long for GSP... pointing would be an indication of a GSP though, so probably a mix. Some GSPs are black instead of liver, but aren't recognized by the AKC.

and I'd agree with the DNA testing.

The pics you're referring to are of black GSP pups that they found on the net, so yes they are lol.

You know you have a wonderfully cute puppy who might or might not have GSP in him, but if I were you I wouldn't waste money on the DNA test as I highly doubt it can tell you what he is, but rather what he is not. Instead take that money and spend it on toys or treats for that cute puppy, because does it really matter what he is?

What a cute puppy I love black labs. I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in and say that I don't think pointing is a sure fire indicant that the pup is part pointer. My 3 year old Golden Retriever has been known to point from time to time. From what I understand it happens in some bloodlines. I found an article about pointing labs check it out

no idea about your pup but he sure is cute!!
Do NOT waste your money on the DNA test - a tiny bit of research will show you very quickly that the tests are useless. I personally know a few people with purebred dogs who did it just to prove it was nonsense and they did. Also know of a huge dog that was 'mainly jack russell' LOL
Your guy's hair does look too long for pure GSP but the tail is way too thin for a lab. People always told me to look at the dogs in shelters near where you live and try to come up with likely mixes.
If I had to guess with your guy I would think that may be border collie and or lab are in there plus may be a pointing dog of some sort
I own a mystery mix too, I know how it is to really want to know what they are :)

Your puppy is adorable! My guess is GSP/Black Lab cross. We had a liver GSP/lab mix and she looked very similar to yours. She was the best dog ever. We now have a black and white GSP, she is  a wonderful dog  too. Good luck with you new addition.
