Hi all,

Nixie's been having diarrhea problems. I moved to a new city and we're adjusting so I'm assuming it's that. She's still her energetic self and not throwing up.

I fasted her for about 20 hours and then put her on a white rice/chicken blend for about 24 hours and started incorporating a little of her original food yesterday with a smidgen of pumpkin to help pass some stool since she wasn't. That helped but today it started getting runny again as I put a little more of her original food in. She didn't have any problems with the food before (Nature's Recipe) so I don't think it's that unless something just changed.

Did I do something wrong? Should I keep her on the rice/chicken/pumpkin diet a little longer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to keep her on the rice and chicken a little longer before adding to it.
What about the water? Could that be a problem?

I would rule out she does not have a bacterial infection, but I would also look into changing foods.  My older GSP had issues until I stopped feeding her food with grain in it.   Not sure which recipe that is grain free, but there could be something in that food that does not agree with her.  Dog food manufacturers will change their recipes.  I know a friend whose dog cannot have potato in his food.

If this started right after you moved, I would suspect something that is different, like water. I just saw this same thing with 2 of my 3 shorthairs that went on vacation with me to CO. My 2 oldest both got diarrhea and I suspect it was from drinking from a mountain lake. It was likely a bacterial infection, but since I was in a very small town with no vet, I chose to treat on my own. I always start with Pepto Bismol and if that does not do it, I give them Immodium (liquid) so I can give them the dose based on weight. That did the trick this last week for me. If you have access to a vet, I would take your pup to the vet. They may prescribe the same thing, but they may do something different. Good luck! It is no fun when a pup has diarrhea.

I second it could be the water... we just went on a 3 week vacation in our RV.... the dogs ate the same food that we fed at home and got the same treats from home but a lot less... they never got any table scraps and because they were on the leash the entire time I know they didn't eat anything weird.... our second to last stop Striker got the squirts... the entire time both dogs had nice solid poop which I know cuz I had to pick it up every time... so this was gross and hard to pick up.... I didn't have much options so I did give him a little less food and pepto... it did the trick!

Thanks everyone for the helpful information. I thought it might be the water too but after this morning when there was throw up in her crate when I let her out I decided to take her to the vet. They took a fecal test and she has the hook worm parasite so I have some medicine to give het and she wanted me to put her on an I/D perscription diet for three weeks. So hopefully all will be well soon! Thanks again!

I wish it was that simple! She's been on the medicine and special diet for two days but the diarrhea actually got worse. I'm taking her back this afternoon to the vet. :/

If it was the water and I gave her some pepto would that only be a temporary fix since I'm not just visiting here? And would it still be a problem after two weeks of living here? Wouldn't her system get used to it by now? How much pepto do you give a 4 month old?

First the disclaimer, I am not a vet, so I always recommend working with a vet, but that said I always have a problem with a vet changing the dogs diet cold. That can cause problems even with a prescription diet. Also, you are giving her a med to get rid of the worms which can impact the digestive track too. If it were my dog, I would talk to the vet and put my dog back on her regular diet and maybe add some probiotics and give it some time. If the diarrhea persists you can feed a chicken and rice cooked diet and gradually go back to the regular diet or you can try adding pumpkin to her regular diet which will firm her up too.

As for the water, unless she should get used to it and it should not be a problem in the long run, and from what you say I am not sure it is the problem now. So, I wouldn't worry about the water.

There are also a couple of other things the vet should check if they haven't already since this is a puppy and that is giardia and coccidia. Both are very common issues with puppies and cause diarrhea. If all of this turns up nothing, one other thing you can look at is salmonella issues with your dog. Sometimes puppies do not have the immune system to kick off salmonella and it can be very rough on the youngsters.

Work with your vet though, these are just ideas that you can discuss with you vet. I would ask about the salmonella right away because the culture actually takes several days and they can start your dog on a broad spectrum antibiotic that could get the process going.

Good luck!

Thanks Texas Belle for the advice and suggestions about what to discuss with my vet. We took a sample for giardia and it was negative and there are no more hook worm eggs in her feces so I think we're on the mend finally! Her stool is finally firming up. She's (for once) sleeping well on the dog bed peacefully with me in the room. We had a rough past two nights that should I ever have children of my own, gave me a glimpse of what it will be like getting up every hour. :-/ How more thankful I am for my mother!

i have had problems with changing my dogs's food, even with the according adjustments. so, i stick with the chicken noodle soup for the puppy lover's soul (large breed formula) and he is perfectly fine. i also buy my dog canned pumpkin, then freeze the pumpkin into ice cubes...a good treat for the dog, and helps maintain them.
