We had a very heavy rain storm yesterday and it never really dried out. The back yard smells like a water logged forest. At around 10 last night I let the two dogs out for one last bout of business. As soon as I opened the door they ran out as usual, and didn't see the very large toad or frog (too dark to tell) on the door mat as they leaped over it. I saw it briefly and almost stepped on it going outside. It hopped and as far away as Velvet was, she saw it, came running back towards it and I grabbed her and got her back inside. Windsor then did the same thing so I grabbed him too and neither one got to pee yet. I was mad cuz I just wanted to go to bed. So Lou went out there with a flashlight and couldn't find it so he let them back out again to pee. I made them come in right away because I didn't know if toads or frogs are poisonous for them and if it would have made them sick? Remember my spider episode? Well I didn't want to have to clean up a round of puke at 10 at night, especially a chewed up toad. So are they bad if dogs eat them? |

| I am sure it depends on the type of toad/frog they eat. But Tucson on a nightly basis kills a toad in the back yard. Comes in foaming at the mouth. Has yet to harm him in any way though. We call him our might toad hunter. LOL He has never gotten sick off them. Though I am sure they don't taste that great so I wonder why he keeps going after the darn things. |

It depends on the toads/frogs native to your area which you can ask your vet about or find on the net. Bugsy LOVES to play with the frogs and toads. Like Tuscon he winds up foaming from the mouth which is from some chemical the toad's skin emits. Apparently doesn't taste bad enough to stop mouthing toads though. Bleck! |

Max has made friends with the toads if he aknowledges them at all he may squish on them a little with his nose. funny to see . Then he usually walks away with out harming them. He is into catching frogs & I think the reason is they hop a lot more then the toads & can catch a little air & that excites him.

Mine play with toads all the time and like others they foam at the mouth. They usually don't kill them though, but they do bring them to me. The foaming is caused from the toad peeing in the mouth. If you ever pick a toad up and scare it, you will have already found out it will pee in your hand. As for being bad, there are some frogs that are not good for a dog, but you would have to ask a vet of find it on the internet. |

Both of mine will chase frogs, very seldom catch them. But they do catch and kill toads. Foam at the mouth but go right back for more.
Zelda has taken to pointing frogs in our garden pond because she knows she can't jump in and chase them.
They will stare each other down until one gives in and moves on. Could last for a minute or an hour. Both very patient.

| Well so far no more toads! I think the deluge of rain we got made him come on the porch. Now if they would just eat the stray cats...that I wouldnt mind as they spray and pee everywhere |

| Ours eat them. One of the pups got really sick and vomited 3 times. She's done that twice. The larger male has not had a problem, however, we have started walking them by leash in the front yard every night. The Bufo Toads can be deadly, but I think they are mostly in Florida. I'm not sure. One of our forum members just lost his dog to the Bufo Toad this week. It's very sad. So, I would be careful, and make sure the very poisonous ones don't live near you. Mine still get them from time to time though....aside from lip smacking and foaming at the mouth and the occasional vomiting, they've been okay. |

Here in MI, we don't have any poisonous toads, but I still don't let my dogs mess with the. You really should consult your vet to see about the toads in your area. I just read a post the other day from a gal in Florida who just lost her dog from grabbing a Bufo Marinus toad. The dog died before she could get to the hospital. They are very deadly and, apparently, very prevalent in Florida. |

| Im sure your fine were you live, the poison toads that would kill a dog are bufo toads that are located in south florida. Plus Im sure there might be some in southern texas, new mexico and arizona. The toads and frogs in the rest of the country are not deadly. I had to learn that the hard way..... |

| i've always thought most toads were not good for dogs. Frogs however are fine! my dog loves the frogs and after one episode with a large toad (where he played with it and was foaming from the mouth and was sick for a day) he won't go near them! we have a good size pond that keeps him busy pointing/chasing frogs for hours and hours!! |

There are some Colorado River Toads in NM and AZ (as well as West Texas). They are Bufo toads and can be deadly. Be careful, please. abq52974, I have a co-owned pup moving from AZ to Jupiter, FL very soon. Let me know if you want to get together with this family....I'lll pm their email. | Only time we get them is when it rains but never saw one so big on our porch until that night. I don't care if they get the stray cats or rabbits or other furry & feathered creatures that get through the cracks of the fence but don't want them near any reptiles as I don't know much about them. We've lucked out so far - no racoons or skunks close by - except for the big skunk last year but that was in the front yard and the dogs don't go out there. |
