About five days ago, we noticed a lump under Sadie's skin along her rib cage.  It appeared to be a tick, but then got bigger and bigger, about the size of a half marble.  My wife noticed it was a hole and cleaned it several times, but it never got better.  Took Sadie in to the vet (needed updated shots too) and found it was Cuterebra.  Apparently, there is a fly out there that likes to bite and then lay eggs in the wound.  Lo and behold, after some minor surgery, I got to see the little fella, which looked like a maggot.  They had to put Sadie out for the surgery, but all is well and recovery is going well.  Never heard of this fly/worm, but it sure was gross.  You could see the hole and actually see the worms poke its head out once in a while, but couldn't grab it.  Not on my dog!

Poor Sadie. Good thing you got to that early. Make me queasy just thinking about it.

I have seen these evil flies on documentaries, and movies...but ICK! Usually it's in other countries, or the bite happened in another country and issues didn't happen until arriving home. So now that I know it happened and not far from us, I'm gonna be checking all of Bella's lumps and bumps like a mad woman lol. Glad your girl is OK and evil bug free.

Glad everything went well! Never heard of that before and I'm sorry it happened but I am glad you investigated the lump and got the sucker out of there!

Back in the early 80s we had a Dachshund who had exactly this (and we are in Colorado) -- it is gross -- and something "good" to have removed by a vet :-) Glad all is well.

That is awful.  I check Binni and Niko every night when they come in.  That fly sounds just like a bot fly.  Thank goodness all is well now.

That does sound pretty disgusting.  Had a friend come back from Costa Rica and had one in his neck that had to be removed . . . so yes they will get on people too.  Can't say I have heard of anyone getting something like that locally.  Glad Sadie came through the anesthesia okay and that it was successfully removed.
