Good Morning!  General Training Question:

At what age should a puppy be proficient on the recall?  I have been working my pup on the recall for about a month, he's 12 weeks old, and I'm just curious as to your opinions on what age pups can be expected to recall successfully.  I don't want to push him too hard, but I also don't want to be too lenient with him.  Tough balance to find!  All suggestions welcome.  Thanks!

It wouldn't be fair, IMO, to formalize the recall until about 6 months old and not to proof the recall until sometime after that - depending on the dog's progress.

I do feel that a dog's reliability should be about 90% by 12 months old - depending on the training and the dog's progress

When it comes to corrections - none really until formilization begins

Thanks, Pixie.  I agree that he shouldn't be corrected until he well uderstands the command, which I guess won't comee for another couple of months, at the earliest.  We don't plan to do any correction until at least 6 months.  Well...besides the obedience type corrections we must do already to discourage bad behaviors, i.e. nipping, chewing furniture, etc.

I will keep doing what I'm doing, knowing that he's a puppy and doing well so far, and I'll keep my expectations at an appropriate level for the next few months.

Thanks again.

Yeah. Too Young. R+ only at this phase - Call dog during feeding, and feed it when it comes. Might work in SIT before feeding, so you reward it for coming, and sitting on command. Next would be leash-work ("Heel", "Sit").

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

I always like to post these words of wisdom. Simple yet very effective. Said to me by a very wise man " you get them coming & you got it licked " in my opinion everything else seems to fall into place.

MAX2: +1 on that!!! Used to be the only thing we would train would be control - "Come", "Heel", "Hunt". Let the dog do, what the dog does beyond that! As I got older, it was only then that I wanted the dog to bring me the bird, with minimal bending and walking to get it :-) (A.K.A, retrieve to hand).

@tgatto, I had to amscray on the sit before eating thing.  Created a serious nervous eating problem for Rowdy and he is by no means a nervous dog.  I have since amscrayed the sit before eat thing and he eats like a champ again... IMHO I wouldn't make them do any commands at eating time as it creates a nervous eater... Long time and renowned GSP trainer Joe Nadeker would agree.
