Hi,

We had a big day today swimming (she is totally conked out right next to me) and I was thinking about water in her ears.

The two dogs I grew up with were not fond of the water so this wasn't too much of an issue.

Are there signs that she has water in her ears? Will she be scratching her ears? What's the best way to get it out?

Thanks so much for helping me in my learning process as a new pup owner.

I purchased an ear cleaning solution at my vet that I put in Bella's ears after swimming, and every so often just for good measure.

I think a dog's shake works well for removing water, and on that same note I'd say a tell tell sign of any water or bothersome ears would be head shaking.

Havoc got an ear infection after his first time in the water. The vet suspected it was because his ears did not dry entirely. He was scratching and rubbing his head on the floor a lot. The vet gave us an ear solution that we now use about once a week if he's been in the water, and we also make sure we take time to dry his ears after trips to the lake or after baths.

Never had a problem with water in my shorthairs ears. I do clean them periodical and check them for redness or unpleasant smell. I don't do anything special after swimming and they have been fine. The shake and remove water on their own.

Same here, have never had a problem in 19 years of owning shorthairs.

Not that it doesn't happen - so it's better to be aware than not.

I have not had this issue with my shorthairs, but I did with my lab.  You would know if they had water in their ears, because they hold their heads offside.  I will use ear flush if they are in really dirty water to clean out their ears.  But have yet to have an issue with the shorthairs and water staying in their ears.

Never thought about water in their ears after swimming. Young dogs in general are more susceptable to ear infections but it's not generally related to being in the water.

I asked the vet about cleaning the ears and was advised to use luke warm slightly salty water, fill the ear with as much of the it as possible and massage well. Then wipe anything out with a clean rag. Done that for years now and never had any issues and both dogs have lovely clean ears. They just shake any left over water out.

Leos had an ear infection a few weeks ago but was just one of those things.

Thanks for the info about cleaning the ears. I need to do that. I'm wondering how Nixie will react to the water in her ear! She loves getting toweled dry too, kind of crazy about it.

yikes I wouldn't put water into their ear - the stuff lots of people use is an astringent - to help dry ears out. Most have rubbing alcohol in them and home-made ones have vinegar and rubbing alcohol in them

I highly recommend this cleaner if you want to clean their ears - it has enzymes that help with bacterial control

The cleanser not the ear solution. I was told to put some on a cotton ball and use that to get solution into the ear canal (dog is lying down on its side put it in the ear that is up) You don't want to squirt a ton of fluid in their ears (and they HATE it!)

I don't use any solution for Bugsy's ears - I have used the Zymox drops when his allergies irritate his ears and my vet said to use q-tips to remove any excess wax or dirt. Apparently their ear canal is SUPER long so you won't get to the ear drum.

In general I wouldn't do anything to her ears unless they smell funky or she is messing with them. I think dogs with lots of hair in their ears have a much harder time
