Hi John, have you decided on what your end product will be? Are you strictly upland? some waterfowling? some rabbits? Look into your local NAVHDA chapter for some guidance maybe a local pro? |

Good that you are planning ahead! Basic obedience is definitely a necessity. Take care, though, to research the various techniques, and philosophies out there. NAVHDA is a good resource - it is a large group of individuals with the same goals - a well-trained Versatile Hunting Dog. You will find an abundance of information from the group, including training techniques, drills, and even some pros and other dog trainers that will help you along the way.
Seeing you are in Wisconsin, you may want to check out: www.ninavhda.org/. They train at Richard Bong State Recreational Park (near you, I think)! |

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd |

More than happy to help-out in any way. I train near Hebron, IL, at McCullom Lake Hunt Club (On Okeson Road). I will let you know next time I am able to get out - probably won't be for another 2-weekends at least. Otherwise, I work with her about daily, but nowhere near the Wisconsin Boarder. I am not currently a member of NAVHDA (just not enough time to be worth it currently), but a lot of the members on this website are, and there is a lot of good information I have received being a member of Shorthairs.net. Not sure about Clicker training - I have heard positives, and negatives (as with any and every training method). Personally, I have learned by trial and error (more error) over the course of a few dogs. Probably the most important thing that I learned is that dogs are pretty resilient to training mistakes - as long as you don't futz too much with their desire (For example, moving too fast, or punishing them for doing something they were bred for). If I want my dog to do something better, I research it thoroughly, and work through it with patience, and persistence (like Force-Fetch, and Casting, for example). I highly recommend researching the Internet, and getting a good dog training book, or DVD, that is focused on Upland, or hunting dog training. YouTube has some good stuff. I used the book, "TriTronics Retriever Training" by Dobbs, et. al. It covers everything from choosing a puppy (alright, you don't need that one...) through Basic Obedience, on through advanced techniques (retrieving, lining, and casting). Evan Graham is another source you will see on this website that, from everything I hear, is excellent. As far as DVDs, "Perfect Start", and "Perfect Finish" series are great sources as well. If you start on the Internet, you will get exposure to some fine professional trainers, and their sources: Jim Dobbs, Evan Graham, Pat Nolan, George Hickox, and Tom Dokken (to name a few). Bear in mind what types of dogs trainers work with - there can be subtleties in temperament of certain breeds that can help, or hurt certain philosophies. For example, Dobbs, Wolters, and Dokken run retrievers, whereas Hickox runs Brittanys. Many of the philosophies will work, but may require some modification (either in technique, expectation of timeframe, or both). For example, I believe you can apply more pressure to a lab, than you can to a pointer (IMO, others may disagree). I don't personally attest to any one trainer over the other, but I have used all of the above at one point or another on my current dog. Right now, don't worry about too much - you have quite a few months before the real work begin! Read, research, watch, and look forward to the FUN! |

Maggie,
You definitely want to do a lot of reading - not only online (even though this forum definitely has a lot of very good opinions and advice - real, experienced advice) but also books. Joan Bailey's "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves" is a great read. It talks a lot about early conditioned learning. I picked up the two-pack with the above book as well as "How to Have the Best Trained Gun Dog". The second book is more practical application and training techniques for a slightly older dog, not a brand new puppy, but also a very good book. Ans, when I ordered them, they were actually signed which I thought was pretty cool. You can pick them up here: swanvalleypress.com/pages/gundogs/gun_dogs.html There is also the NAVHDA Green Book, but I personally haven't read it yet, so I can just quote others who say it is a very solid book to read and own.
Good luck with the new pup! The first month is "fun"... |

| Might be able to get out Saturday for some training on quail... I am keeping my fingers crossed. Thought I could get out a few weeks ago, but had to replace a car. |
