With two pups it was bound to happen...

Patch has a small wound on her neck. I think Huey finally got a good bite in...he "fights" back when they wrestle, but Patch doesn't realize shes got 40 lbs on him. I swear she's convinced she's a lap dog...so the matches can be fairly one sided.

I found the scab just now, doesn't seem to be bothering her and it wasn't deep.  I cleaned it off, but is it worth a bandage?

Sounds like it should heal fine just keep an eye on it. If its concerning you, you may want to take her in. Can't really judge without a picture.

A scab is nature's bandage. It seals the wound from bacteria and other forms of external contamination. As long as you avoid activities that could re-injure the area and keep him out of prolonged contact with water that could macerate the scab, he should be fine. Bandages or ointments won't help and can sometimes be a nuisance.

Wow, that's harsh .. and yeah, definitely get insurance. They might give you problems if they decide you have an "aggressive dog", but there are discount programs (I use Pet Assure, but I've heard of United Pet Care too..) you can get in addition to pet insurance. Look into it!

Get used to the injuries as you have a shorthair. They always get knocks and scrapes. I usually clean the area with saline, dry the area and put some antibiotic ointment on it. Then watch it for redness. If it still is worrying you take her to your vet.

My springer spaniel, Jackie, that I lost last November had aggressive moments and actually attacked Zoe when she was 10 wks old (Jackie had caught a baby bunny and Zoe was going to investigate).  It was in the evening so I took her to the emergency vet becasue she was cut up pretty bad.  They cleaned her wounds, gave her pain meds and anibiotics to keep it from getting infected. I thought for sure the poor pup would be scarred for life but everything scabbed over and healed quite nicely - you would never know to look at her now. As for pet insurance, my vet gave me a good recommendation, he said instead of paying a premium to an insurance company every month, open up a separate account at your bank and just put whatever you would be paying each month into that account and use it for vet expenses.

As Bev said, with a GSP you kind of get used to bumps and cuts. I remember the first injury Bo had I freaked out (first time dog and GSP owner). By the time he was a year old I was much more laissez-faire about his injuries. If you're worried, go to the vet. But unless there is significant blood loss or a large gaping hole, the vet will do the same things Bev recommended: clean, dry and monitor.

Excellent, EXCELLENT idea.....the insurance money in your own bank account!   Afterall, you would never have to worry about being claims being denied!

I ended up getting pet insurance. I cannot keep money in a bank account for anything - something else is always going wrong where the money comes in handy. Did really well with gopetplan - $77 for the two of them - monthly.

Covers injuries, illness but I have to wait a year on something to do w/ the knee. Good reimbursement turn around from what I hear. You can put the vet bill on your credit card and you'll get the reimbursement back before the cc payment is due. I havent' had to use it yet knock on wood but I feel better by having it. You can set your reimbursement and deductible limit.

Hi, does the gotpetplan cover vaccinations and yearly exams, etc.I looked at the plan, and it looks really good.  We've spent more on vet bills with these two this year, than I have spent on my own children in the last 5 years!  Not even joking!

so it's a one year wait on pre-existing?   That would be everything on my two pups!

just looked at my plan....does not cover pre existing conditions. and the knee thing is a year. I got a multiple pet discount. i am worried about Velvet taking Windsor's eye out as she likes to bite his head when he makes her mad.

I agree with TB that you should just get used to the injuries, especially if you hunt them and/or run them in ability tests. As for caring for a scrape such as that, Bag Balm is a favorite of mine for treating raw patches, scrapes abrasions, et cetera. I especially like Bag Balm for raw or bleeding paws.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.
