hello everyone, I just got my new pup Cabella she is 9 weeks old right now and I will be having her trained my a guy out of Fall city WA. I have high Hopes for her!!! I am new to Bird dogs and to owning dogs period, so I will ask questions!

here is my question, I got some wings to play with her to get her started but not sure what to do with them?, I dont want her to chew on them and eat them and thats what she wants to do!!

and is there anything I can do to get her more prepared for a trainer? what can I get her started on?    Thanks for the info,

Will

You can use the wings tied to a stick/pole/fishing rod with a fairly long string and teach the dog to stalk and point. This is all visual so you dont want to do too much and once you get one or two points you would want to put the wings away and save them for your next pup.

Ask your trainer what he/she wants you to do.
Some trainers like to have basic obedience started others like to have a raw pup.
Depending on what age you will be bringing her will depend on what you need to teach - house broken, crate training, sit, stay, etc.

This is a great time of year to get a pup and I would guess you are not bringing her to the trainer before 6 months old,so if you want to get started on some hunt training, empty fields,in the begining, would be great. You can work on her paying attention to you, cooperation, checking in,search, independence, boldness, intro water, controlled fun retrieves just to name a few.

Great time of year - have fun

my advice would be for "you" to train "your" dog and not someone else.

if your puppy could speak it would tell you the same.

best wishes

I would agree with Pixie Bee. Alignment with your trainer will save you and your trainer headaches down the road. To Eva's point, your involvement will be paramount to the success of the training, and a consistent approach to your trainer will ensure success.

What a great name, "Cabella"! I hope she does not represent the outdoor chain, and you wait forever for her (I have had some service issues with Cabella's (the store)). I have come to appreciate Bass Pro Shops, or Gander Mountain, but these are not good names for dogs...  (although, Gander might work!)

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

I totally agree with Eva, training your own dog is far more rewarding, even if you get help, doing it yourself will build a strong bond with the dog.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.
