As soon as we finally are clear of any health things going on another one springs up on us. Luna is a year and half and has occasionally on a very short occasion chewed at her paw, however over the past 2-4 weeks she has significantly been chewing at her paws. Everything I read up on it says it's proably allergy, but this late in the spring I'm having a hard time pinpointing what it could be. We got a new delivery of woodchips around our veggie garden she likes to go in that we haven't had before, and we changed her food from taste of the wild to nature's variety instinct salmon in the past 3 weeks. The itchy-ness is really remaining in between her pawpads where it hasn't gotten bloody, but dark in color from licking and chewing. I've been cleaning it with some hydrogen peroxide when it looks worse and starting to look red, and even put some EMT gel on there to help it heal. At this point I'm thinking of almost putting dog booties on for her to leave it alone but know that those won't last long either.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm inclined to agree with the allergy concept. It could be the change in food or outdoor or both. I have allergies and get a report daily. There are still some trees that can cause them, and grass is always mentioned. Have you tried to keep her feet cleaned off when she comes in from outside should it be outdoor related.

I would suggest discussing this with you vet if you haven't already.

Thanks Nancy..We do try wiping her feet down when we get in, but she spends much of her day outside when the weather is nice that I have a feeling if it's environmental and whatever she's exposed to it could be inhalant or topical allergy :/ Doesn't make it easier does it?

I may try switching her food to what she was on prior too...she's just a very picky eater and got very tired of TOTW, and loves the natures variety. Back to the basics!

We have some prednisolone from previous vet visits with her so I am trying that today and seeing if it makes any difference. She doesn't seem to respond to benadryl. Thanks for the suggestions! If anyone has any others let me know! Our vet knows, and would suggest at this point the prednisolone and same things we're doing. If her paws don't improve or worsen though we may take another trip in just to make sure they're OK.

Allergies are a good bet, but it may also be her ears. So,check her ears. I know it sounds weird, but dogs will lick and chew their feet when they have ear problems. Look and see if there is redness or any brownish gunk. If so that is a good indication of a yeast infection in the ears which is very itchy. If it is the ears, go to the vet and they will get you on a good ear cleaner and probably put her on an antibiotic.

it does sound like allergies - to me it sounds like contact allergies but it could be food.
The booties aren't a bad idea for a couple of reasons - if it is a contact allergy you will find out quickly. - it will help to keep her from licking - and keep it cleaner if there is any open wounds.
I friend uses baby socks or kids socks and tapes them on
If she keeps at it I would use a cone to keep her from them

I have also heard that making strong tea and soaking their feet in the tea is super helpful. Something about the tanins drying stuff out.
Good luck!

Oh also review the ingredients in both foods and note any differences

I totally agree w/ the allergy concept. Once we got Windsor onto grain free food - the salmon one - all itching, pink skin and paw chewing stopped.
