Is there a published list of GPS hunting commands or would someone be kind enough to post such list. I remember off- hand:

Come, whoa, sit, down, out, give, heal,

I have some books/dvds coming and have start with the basics although she is not really ready yet, I have just been testing the waters. She seems to recognize a few but we are a long way out.

You can use whatever word you want for your commands. I personally like to use commands that come to me easily even if they are something no one else uses. Perfect example is my release word is "play." Most people use something like "ok" or "free" as their release word.

I use HERE - it travels a lot better.

What is OUT? -I use OUT to tell the beasts the kitchen is off limits when I'm cooking.

Most people use DROP instead of give.

But like TB says - the commands are up to you -

I speak to my dogs in Polish, use a whistle and hand signals.
If I yell HOOOOOOO, the dogs come running.
Use what works!

Definitely no standard out there for commands, let alone whistles. This post would definitely bring out the differences. For Sadie in the field, I use: "Hunt!", "Whoa!", "Fetch!"; with the Whistle - two blasts means the same as "Come!", One blast is "whoa!"; Hand signals are used to cast, or bend the dog (I point to the direction I want the dog to go).

I have heard, and seen some strange commands in my days in the field. Seems a lot of hunters want to re-name their dogs in the field after profanity: "HERE [insert profanity here]!". I even saw one hunter use a finger at the dog. I would relate it to giving the dog the bird, but that just seems counter-productive to me.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd
