Hi everyone,

I'd like to know the opinions in the group regarding feeding puppy food to pups less than a year of age.  I know a lot of people don't, but my vet whom I've been going to for 20 years insists that puppies be fed a high quality puppy formula.  My other question is regarding ready-mix food.  Does anyone feed Sojos?

Thanks,

We generally feed puppy food for the 1st 6-9 months. We use Purina ProPlan and mix with a little canned food (at the evening meal). I know that people with certain breeds are careful not to feed a high protein food during the puppies' first months because it may be linked to the devlopment of certain bone problems, thought to be linked to too-fast growth. In my experience, these conditions are uncommon in Shorthairs, and the little devils are so active, they need the additional calories.

I feed puppy food (mushed) starting at 3 weeks of age. By the time the puppies leave at 8 weeks of age, they are eating the puppy food dry.  I feed Pro Plan Puppy Chicken and Rice, only until 6 months of age.  Then they go on Adult Pro Plan Chicken & Rice.  At that time, I also supplement with a chewable Vit C/once a day (and take one myself too).

I have been feeding ProPlan for about 3/4 years now.  Coincidentally, for about the same number of years,  I have been having puppy absorption problems, tiny pups/normal size pups, and very small litters – last 2 litters (different bitches) have been only 2 pups....
Years ago, I used to have nice sized litters (couple of litters of 11/12 pups), evenly sized, healthy pups.  And over a span of about 15/17 years or so, had ever only lost 1 pup, with never a Csection needed....
I am at a loss as to what has been going on in the most recent years...  I know other breeders who are feeding ProPlan with no problems, so I don’t believe it is the food.  Just seems like a strange coincidence......
