| Brings up a new question for those that run specialties with all breed clubs. How do you work with your local clubs on getting judges? Do your clubs work with you proactively or do they hand you a judge and say "here".
Long story short - we had a situation where we were handed a judge that we didn't want. Gave our feedback and told nothing can be done. Then the judge opts out and I only found out after a new judge was assigned - not even a courtesy "by the way" call.
I've heard similar stories from others as well. Gets frustrating when you spend lots of time preparing judges names for the clubs and then they are not considered.

Wait, wait....hold it! As Show Chair (and immediate past Prez) of my
all-breed club, I have to tell you that in order to get judges who
will truly look at dogs, who are good with puppies and not always judge
the other end of the lead...you have to be in touch with other local
all-breed clubs around as well, and we feel you have to hire far in
advance. I am currently hiring my October, 2014 panel.
What may happen between now and then is something else...another club
that doesn't hire quite so far in advance may wind up calling the very
same judge you hired two years ago and their show is two weeks before
yours and 100 miles away. People go...well...that Mesilla Valley show
chair just copies what the Cloudbutt club does. It really doesn't
work like that at all. We (most of us anyway) try to look around to
see who had who when and still get the short end of the stick. No
one's fault, just kind of the way it is. We hope we are hiring judges
who will draw us an entry (not just pro handlers and not just owner
handlers...just a good mix of folks who will love being at the show
and hopefully take home a champion or a major or two).
Vicki, I would encourage you to speak to the Show Chair or any member
of the Judges Selection Committee for suggestions (both positive and
negative).(just please don't do it 30 minutes before the first day of
a cluster )
If it is a close by club then join, volunteer for the Show committee
and make the changes you hope to see. Also, I find that ring
stewarding can give you a totally different picture of certain judges
(and also totally affirm opinions ). Even if the judge you steward
for and basically spend the day with doesn't judge your breed, they
may judge your group or even Best In Show. This is your opportunity
to speak about your breed (not in the negative) but in a sense to
educate. I've done that for 20+ years and have judges who ask for me
by name (Forsyths included) to work inside their ring. It gives you a
good feeling about maybe ya did something right.

| I run both of my specialties with an all breed club. They present me with a
list of judges that are qualified for my breed, and send them back a list of
judges we would prefer, in order of preference after consulting with the
"show" folks in my club. This year, I have an instance where we really
didn't get anyone we wanted, but the judge we did have has passed away and
they are in scramble mode to fill his assignments.
Overall, I find the all breed clubs a pleasure to deal with. I try very hard
to respond promptly so that if we have a favor to ask, they accommodate us.
I have also submitted names for review for the judging panel, but it is very
hard to find all around guys that will commit 2 years in advance.

Diane - with Eastern we have a show committee meeting come up with a list of judges by order of preference and give them to the show chair. They then tell us which one we end up with. Usually it's one of the top 3 names.

This is an interesting topic. As the show chair (and 10 year committee member) for an all-breed club I always tried to get a specialty club's requested judges and if I couldn't get their first choice for the year we were working on I would book the judge for the following year or two for the specialty club. Our recent experience with an all-breed cluster hasn't been that good. Over 5 years we submitted a list of 10 judges that we would like to see and NEVER once got anyone on the list. Needless to say our club no longer participates with that cluster. Sunnie FairBuck Hollow GSPsAKC Breeder of Meritwww.buckhollow.net

| It's a good point Sunnie, when there is no cooperation then the specialty club needs to look elsewhere.

We are with two clusters now and have had pretty good success with getting the judges we want. I think a lot depends on the show chairs for the clubs you are working with, some are way better than others.
