I didn't get Diane's original email to the list but I've done PennHIP twice and I'm very pleased with the methodology. Becky's synopsis is right on. You can do it as early as 16 weeks. As more GSPs use this method, the median will change. They will rank your dog in comparison with others in their database of the same breed.

Diane, you can search the OFA site for people who have done both PennHIP and OFA hips, the numbers don't always jive like you would think. You can see the age they were done too.

Penn Hip is objective while OFA is subjective.  Penn Hip uses replicable measurement methodology that eliminates subjectivity.  The score is given based on the actual measurement of laxity for both hips.

Penn Hip requires 3 films vs. OFA requiring 1.   Doesn't require any additional sedation to shoot two more films.

Hi Diane,

Considered Penn hip for our bitch this spring. Our vet, who was Penn trained with the vet who developed the Penn Hip system, told us it is extremely comprehensive and thorough. There is much more manipulation of joints and xrays. (which also means more time and sedation)she felt with our dogs in particular, and shorthairs in general, probably not worth the extra cost. She felt some other breeds probably should do Penn Hip. I got the impression she was correct in her assessment as our Mimi's hips came back ofa excellent.

What age is optimal to have your GSP Penn Hipped? What is the average score for a GSP? How do they compare to OFA's rating?
