Hello all I'm new here from Belfast Northern Ireland

Im having issues with SA and my GSP boy, when we are not ay home he is fine (neighbours told me :))

When he knows I am in the house and he is outside he frets dreadfully, pacing the garden and crying constantly.

I also have a Pointer who is not like this so I dont think its anything we have done and migjt be a gsp thing???

I wouldn't say it is GSP thing.... have you had the GSP since it was a puppy or did you rescue it? I do know mine prefer to be around me but they will go outside without me and by themselves...right now my younger one is sleeping on the couch with the kids upstairs and my older one is outside...

Hi Kylia.  We had a similar experience with our last girl.  We regularly left her for short periods of time in our vehicle when travelling on holiday, popping into a shop, visiting family and friends etc (not during hot or cold weather i hasten to add )  On the occasions that she could hear and/or see us she would cry, but if werent visible or within earshot she would settle.  I'm afraid that i dont really know what the answer is but i'm sure more experienced posters will be able to offer advice, just wanted to let you know we experienced something similar.

Miss you forever Kintra baby xxx

Mine would cry too if they knew they were stuck in the car and they could see me and I was not in the car with them... or if I go outside and I leave them in the house they will cry too... I don't think that is so much separation anxiety though...it is more like why on earth do you get to be outside having fun and we don't?

Back to the original post your dog might be bored outside by itself or just doens't want to be outside...

Hello all thanks for your thoughts.

My boy is a sweetheart and a rescue, he was a failed abused gundog with fear aggression. We have had him a year now and he is quite settled but I do think maybe his bad start has made him very clingy. He would cuddle up to you all day and not be interested in even going to the loo!

I was out in the garden there for an hour with them and have come in to do some housework and he is now pacing the garden whining, Kintrasmum I do feel better that you have experienced this too, Piper is 3 and our Pointer Cassie is 2 in July, but even though she is the baby she never cries, she loves lying in the garden topping up her tan, we have had her from a pup though so maybe poor Pipers unknown past has something to play in this and he lacks confidence?

I think you are probably doing everything fine and I think you nailed it with lack of confidence (the dogs lack of it)... Obidience really helps build confidence in dogs... also make sure you don't over coddle the dog too cuz that will just be a positive re-enforcement to the insecurities...

My boy Dax is the same way as far as the SA....sometimes he'll get bored and stop whining after a while, but hes usually outside with me anyway. Good Luck with your boy!

Ya, if I'm outside and the dogs can see me, they will whine at the door. In their case it's def. not separation anxiety -- it is "how come you get to be outside with the birds, and bugs and fresh air and and and ... " :)

My 7 month old male is really attached to me. If he is outside and can see me through the glass, he wants in. If he can't see me, he tends to really enjoy being outside. After not giving in to his wining to come in, he is getting better. He has also really started to notice birds flying and is less worried about coming in. So I guess the boredom issue could be big. BTW - saw him stalking a bird for the first time. Really interesting to see how slow he can move if he wants to.
