I know it states topic's must be dog related but it is the off season  I don't turkey hunt myself but know a number of you here do. How have you been doing ? I know by me here they were sitting on eggs  sometime in april which is early. I think the early warm spell has a lot to do with it.

I don't hunt either. We have a place in western NC along the French Broad River north of Asheville. Jenny and Bearoff flushed a flock of turkey back at the end of April. The males flew one direction while the rest of the flock walked the other way. Bearoff saw this and chased them a short way up the mountain.

The farmer who is growing stuff on my land is also a turkey hunter. I know he was going to hunt on my place especially since the turkeys were coming in and eating on his collards and other greens.

I think the season goes out around mid-May.

With this spring being warmer and dryer than it has in the last five years before we've seem a nice increase in birds here in Missouri. Conservation department says an increase of 42%. I was able to take my boys out one morning in youth season. I was calling by mouth and had a tom calling back but, was covered up in whitetails. We had about 7 does come in on us that kept the turkey from getting close. Can't wait for fall season. Should be some big birds.

We are not "sexy" enough to call in the gobblers.
Not even the jakes come running.

So far we worked two gobblers.

One - I called and then heard a shot - guess what - I called for someone else - at least he could have come over and thank me :)

Andrew worked another - but he was too aggressive and the gobbler moved on

Calling is fun - hearing someone else shoot your bird

isn't

I do believe the weather must be the factor. However sounds like you had one coming just wasn't your time . Talking to a friend from orange county last night & he said all the turkey hunters he spoke with were not doing well.

No turkey on this end.  Training progressing nicely though, and starting in June, I may have some more posts as I am able to train on Quail at the club...  Oh wait, would that go in "Training", or in "Hunting"...  UGH!  Now I AM confused...  again...  Maybe...

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

I just picked up 50 quail chick's last weekend. I usually have quail on hand all the time. The nice thing about living in a rural area.

Terra's Owner, Love the French Broad. I have rafter her a few times :)
Now onto the Turkeys. We have a field behind our house and I could see two turkey's in the distance. At first glance I thought they were both Toms as they had their feathers all puffed out. When I got the binoculars to see how big they really were :), I found them to be hens just preening. I watched them for over half an hour. They stayed in the same place and I think checked every feather on them.

Did you take that one or one that looks like but has a beard?

JUST "SHOT" That one with the camera. That's the closest I got this season to any turkey.

Ok forget turkyes

I've been tripping over woodcock on our property.
We don't shoot them anymore b/c no one likes the way they taste.

I have to bring 7 1/2 loads with me when I deer hunt b/c about 75 yards in front of me are usually grouse walking around, like they have no where to go.
Big ones,too,like chickens!

Ruff grouse or spruce grouse walking around like chickens. Spruce grouse tend to be bigger.
