We just lost our female after only 10 wonderful years and desperately need to find another.  We are in San Diego and can travel as far as 6 - 8 hours driving time to find one.  Thanks very much.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to loose a beloved family member.

I know a lot of the breeders in CA (I'm originally from the Bay Area). PM if you would like a list of names. Are you looking for a companion, a dog to hunt with, show, or performance?

Thank you for your help.  I was a NAVHDA member for a while, but I don't hunt anymore.  My wife and I stay in touch with the NAVHDA people and of course we love the breed, so we're looking for a companion.  We spent 24/7 around our previous dog.  She ran after rabbits, pointed at birds, and had a wonderful time on a leash-free 400 acre island every day of her life until her final three days.  The new dog will enjoy the same lifestyle.

Maybe a rescue?

I agree that a rescue or dog from non-hunting lines would be best.  IMHO it's unfair to a GSP from hunting lines to be ONLY a companion dog.

The worst day of hunting is better than the best day at work.

I found a female that will be perfect.  Thanks to everyone who sent me leads.  If some of you think that it's a mistake or wrong to have a hunting line as a companion dog, I wonder what you think of show dogs?  My old GSP trained with NAVHDA but I never hunted her.  She was easily the best water retriever in the club.  Plus she ran on a leash-free island ever day of her life from six months until two days before she died.  I wonder how many hunting line GSPs enjoy the same?

It could be debated until the cows come home.

I'll throw this out there as food for thought:

dogs who are bred for hunting - having a good to high prey drive - will have a need to express this drive. While exercise is a good outlet for energy - it's not the same as hunting - both mentally or physically.

Is it fair to say this frame of mind thinks poorly of non hunting bred show bred hunting breeds?
Yes, probably it is.

Engaging the dog in activities such as NAVHDA even tho the dog will never be hunted is a thoughtful and kind act on the owner's behalf.
I wish more owners considered joining hunting clubs.

I think it totally depends on the dog itself!

I wish I'd visited the website sooner and could have contacted you. We have the perfect adult dog whom we would love to find a terrific home for, just like you describe. She would be totally happy there at your side!

Good luck with your new dog and so sorry for your loss. They are always hard to lose.
