Well...my wife and I decided that one dog wasn't enough...so we are bring home a new pup next Saturday! Not another GSP...wife got to pick this one...so we are getting a black lab.  Almost ended up with a great dane!

I grew up in a multi-dog house...but never had to be the Alpha...or handle the introductions...until now.  Read up on some techniques, but wanted to see what fellow GSP parents did when they brought home a new little guy.  Our lab book suggests putting the pup in his crate and letting the resident dog investigate the situation. Seems more controlled that way.

Thoughts?

I always intro my dogs to a new puppy in my backyard. I keep the pup on a leash and let my dogs sniff and get acquainted. Once things seem to be going well, then I let the pup off leash.

I am not a multiple dog owner but my family brings their dogs when they visit, one neighbor foster's pups, and pretty much everyone in the community brings their pups to us to meet Bugsy so we have fairly regular introductions. I agree with Bev, we allow B to meet the pups outside. The only times the intro felt uncomfortable was once when the owner had the pup crated and was afraid to let her out. Bugsy was VERY interested in what was in the crate (plastic so poor visibility) and the pup was crying.
The other time was also when an owner wanted to hold the pup and every time B went to smell it they would lift the pup higher. Pure chaos.
Interestingly (not) both of those dogs are poorly socialized.

It's Bugsy's world...

I introduce the same as Texas Belle, in the backyard/dog yard. I've done this through many intros, including many, many foster dogs and have never run into any problems. This goes for both males and females.

Good luck with your new lab pup. Definitely looking forward to pictures.

I read somewhere, when I brought Asher (GSP) home to an established yellow lab, that it's best to introduce them on more of a neutral territory. I had my dad come over and bring the new puppy just down the street. So he's not seen as just coming running in to the elder dog's territory. It worked pretty well, but my yellow lab was so laid back, I wasn't too worried.

I have read that about neutral turf too, but I have always done introductions in my backyard and never had any issues.
