I have been reading up on Vizslas and they seem like wonderful home and hunting dogs as well. I realize that this is A GSP forum but does anybody have an opinion on Vizslas? GSP sound like great dogs but how do Vizslas stack up in comparison? I would like a dog as a family member and a hunting, hiking outdoors companion. I would also seriously consider a rescue. Thanks for all of your help. Rick

I have a Vizsla nephew dog. Love him to bits but he has a lot more quirks than our GSP including grumpiness when tired, toy possession...etc. not that they all are this way but in talking with other owners it would seem that Vizslas are a little more sensitive than GSPs, both very sensitive an very smart breeds. All of the Vizslas I know are also gun shy, but this could be a coincidence obviously. I adore our nephewdog, but am obviously partial to our GSP. My brother in law has commented several times Bella being further along for her age than the Vizsla was... But this again could be training differences. I can personally say Bella has been the easiest trained dog we have had. So smart. We have not trained hunting yet, but we natural instincts are strong and show constantly. We debated the two for some time...and are very happy with our choice

I would go with the GSP.

GSPs rank 17th on Coren's list of Breed Intelligence. Vizsla's rank 25th (Labs are 7th, and Border Collie is 1st for reference). Both are in the category of Excellent Working Dogs, with understanding of new commands within 5 - 15 repetitions, and obey first command 85% of the time or better. Basically, it means that GSPs are easier to train, and more reliable once trained (albeit barely, and on average). (Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intelligence_of_Dogs)

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

I debated between GSPs and Vs about 9 years ago. I ended up with GSPs and am now glad I did. I think overall GSPs are better all around dogs. I also think GSPs are a little less high strung. I also prefer the GSP sturdiness over the Vs. Sorry, but you did ask on a GSP forum. Whatever you choose be sure you find a good breeder who does health testing, socialization intro to birds, etc.

Thank You all! This is going to be a tough decision. Glad I don't have to do it today. I posed the same question on a Vizsla board and pretty much got similar replies slanted in favor of Vizslas. Go figure!

I have both, 1 Vizsla and 6 GSPs, all are family/hunting/house dogs. Both breeds are great but are not for everyone. A short version of my observations (for what it is worth), GSPs are velcro dogs, Vizslas are super glue. While my GSPs are cuddled up next to you on the couch, the Vizsla has to be on you, the higher the better. Vizslas tend to be slower to mature, they react more to your moods and can be quite the manipulators. At 6 my Vizsla still has a ton of energy bouncing around like a super ball. The GSPs have energy but are much quicker to settle down in the house. Most field Vizsla breeders will tell you they do not start breaking their dogs until around 3 years. GSPs are more forgiving of hander/training errors. When working my GSPs they can be hard headed but seem to be much more willing to please. The Vizsla seems to know what I want but it takes a lot of convincing to get her to do it my way rather than hers. Don't believe everything you read about the breeds. My best advice is to meet both breeds before deciding which one fits your family best. Either way you go, find a breeder that is willing to give you lots of help along the way, especially with a Vizsla.

I would contact http://grousebend.com/. They raise hunt, show and health clearance both breeds. They are a husband and wife team who are HT and FT AKC judges and handlers. They could give you an objective opinion.

My GSP and Vizsla are with me almost 24 hours a day since I brought them home. I don't have a favorite because they are so different. I will say that while our GSP is better behaved inside our Vizsla is better out in the field. The Vizsla is super lippy and lets you know when he's wants something but, the GSP is the one that cries like a new born when I have to leave them. He doesn't like to sit on you like most Vs but, he does lean on me a lot. The GSP on the other hand needs to be held like a baby at least once or twice a day while she licks my entire face. She also has the need to lick my boys hair dry after they get out of the shower. At 8 months our GSP female is 42lbs while our 7 month Vizsla male is 57lbs.
