Greetings, I would really like to get a GSP for hunting. I have been reading up and they seem to be the best all around dog. I own two dogs. A German Shepherd and Cattle Dog mix. Neither dog is a hunter and they are both getting old. Both were rescued. I'm only a part time hunter and I have a lot to learn. I'm looking for a dog that would give me more of an edge when I am bird and small game hunting. I was wondering if a rescue dog would suit my needs. Am I better of getting a pup from a breeder or can I do well adopting. I still have to talk my wife into this as well. I live in San Diego CA. Any sugestions or input would be appreciated. Rescue shorthairs can and do make wonderful hunting companions. Be sure and let the rescue agency know you want a hunting companion. Some rescues get turned in because they are gun shy. That can be fixed, but it takes allot of hard work. You are probably better if you get a rescue that does not have those issues. Ask the rescue volunteers, many actually intro the rescues to birds and guns and evaluate them for hunting.

Having had a rescue GSP as well, it does help if you let the rescue know you are planning to hunt (although some rescues don't like that). The Rescue I got Sophie (my last GSP) from was right by a hunt-club, and would start some of the younger (and older) dogs on birds, and guns. They could point a hunter in the direction of a dog that was, or shows promise as a hunter(drive/desire, non-gunshy, etc), and away from the ones that may require more work.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

I have two dogs that we have adopted; both never hunted a day in thier life before they came to live with us. One of them has turned out to be a smash up hunting machine. The other is still a work in progress, but has BIG potential. I my experience these dog first love is to HUNT, followed in close second by a snuggly bed for when they are finished hunting. Do your reasearch on the rescue and the dog first, be willing to spend time with the dog, if you need help there are VERY wise people on this forum for advice, and these dogs will work just as hard as they love you for giving them a great home.

Not sure if you have a dog in mind or just getting ready to start looking. I did a quick search on Petfinders and saw this listing. http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/22516207 I currently have 2 rescues that I hunt and am starting to train a 3rd one that came from the owner and not a shelter or rescue. My one piece of advice would be don't be afraid to drive aways to find the right dog. Well that and don't be afraind to ask questions or advice from the people on this forum.
