It's me looking for reassurance, not Keely  I was sure i was going to be an overly-anxious mum where Keely's concerned because of what happened to Kintra but so far i've not been too bad! But now Keely's taken to collapsing after a bout of playing fetch.  I'm using a ball launcher for approx 5 minutes whilst out in the field a couple of times a day, and i'm randomly throwing the ball in the garden too but i wouldnt say i'm over-exercising her.  She will chase the ball approx 5 or 6 times then just drop to the ground in an exhausted way (always when she has the ball).  When i approach her she throws the ball at me and i generally end the game right there.  She always pants whilst running around too (something Kintra NEVER did for some reason).I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, i think it's just that she has boundless energy and an obsession with playing fetch and that she's just putting a lot of energy into it. I know some of you may be thinking "duh, that's just a pup getting tired from playing", but as strange as it sounds i'm not used to the panting or the obsession with fetch.  Does this all sound normal?

I should have titled this post "Looking for reassurance....AGAIN" - sorry, i seem to be quite a high maintenance fellow forum user

Very normal. All of mine are obsessive about fetch. Halo even takes it to the level of frothing at the mouth she gets so excited. Also, when we are done they will literally throw themselves on the ground. Depending on the temps and what they have been doing before we play fetch the game can last a while or end pretty quickly.

Thanks, i feel better. She does really enjoy it, and will even leave her dinner behind if she thinks someone's about to throw a ball - think the ball may even be a better training incentive than food.

I'm an idiot, it's just occurred to me that she may be worse just now because she's just cleared of tapeworm. She may be a little bit less energetic than usual.

Has the weather gotten warmer?

Mine pant all year round when they retrieve.
As for collapsing?
She's pooped - make the retrieves shorter - if it worroes you.
Persoanlly, I try to make the retrieves s long as possible in an attempt TO wear them out.
You could go for a cadio test.

Has she been tested for heart worm?

We are actually having a mini heatwave over here (i know how stupid i sound) but she's a heavy panter in the morning and evening when it's still cool. We're still having frost in the morning - typical SCOTTISH idea of a heatwave ;0)

I did think about the heartworm thing, but Scotlands only had a couple of cases, it's considered more of a possibility in England, particularly the south. I think i'll maybe take her to the vet just to be sure, esp now that i've got the worry in my head. Part of me is scared to ignore my gut feelings with these things after Kintra. To make matters worse she's actually lying beside me moaning just now :0(

Also remember she is black, Bugsy is a super dark brindle which can appear black or brown and he can be panting on any sunny day if he's running like a fool (normal) so it could be she'll be more sensitive to heat than Kintra was.
Bugsy is very slobbery when he's excited too so that contributes to the appearance of overheating

It's Bugsy's world...

When we had our two week heat wave... no only did we have to convince Bells that she could still potty in her spot on this new green stuff (we had to shovel some of the left over snow in her spot for a couple of days to get her to poo there without holding it and whining again right after coming in from potty)... but she also had to learn to regulate her body temp in the new temps just as she did in the cold weather. She had never experienced feeling hot before... she panted all day even though it was not drastically hot. She still had a lot of energy but she crashed a lot quick after getting to fetch and run around in the back yard.

My point is just that the warmer weather is probably playing a role. If I remember correctly Keely isn't much older than Bells so she has also lived much of her life in cooler weather so far.

When the weather is warmer both of mine pant - looks like they're running around smiling. Last summer I was playing ball w/ Windsor and he passed out right in the pacasandra - out COLD. I think she just loves to play, gets all excited and then poops out! You are a very good mom to Keely - it's ok to be concerned about things.

Thanks guys, you're all right about the weather thing. To be honest, she does seem a little brighter today, so maybe a combo of the weather and getting over the tapeworm - she's back to being a little madam again ;0)
