Luckly living here in south east NE we have tons of crp ground for trainig and hunting. Today i took Axe to a basin a couple miles away from the house that is backed up to a feedlot so i knew there were at least a few birds in this field. todays trip was more to work on our field "woah" and it was flawless (that was a great feeling btw) but after working for an hr on woah and some retreveing walking the whole field and comming across no birds we were 200 yrds back to the truck thewind in our favor Axe was running his normal pattern roughly 40 yrds in front of me he stops, no point, turns then starts pattern again... up goes a rooster.... then a hen! He tottaly missed both birds. he watched very closly after it came up and was ready waited perfect. was a great training day but damn walked by two birds soo close to the truck twice.

I'd rather be in the field with my dog...... PERIOD!!!!!!

You said he stopped - this may mean he acknowledged scent.
He needs more experience.
I would ease up on the strict obedience in the field and concentrate on as much exposure to birds as possible. Let him work the birds - forget whoa, forget everything - let him gain confidence in his nose and instincts.

btw - a stop can be a point.

Also if he was hot and panting (breathing through his mouth) he might have had a harder time picking up the scent. I live in TX and we tend to wet the dogs down really well to minimize the panting when they are working in hot weather as it is much harder for them to pick up scent, especially with the younger dogs.

You are missing my point.
He is 14 months old and you recently acquired him.
Was he on birds before you had him?
Age alone would make him inexperienced.

No I hear you loud and clear build him up with. Confidence of his own nose and his instinct that he is bred for. I get that but I don't agree to drop all his other training. You got to build the foundation for him to stand on. Yes he was on birds from 8 weeks on he is great with them. I TOTTALY understand what ur saying with birds give it time. Thanks again for your input an I will try more bird time

my suggestion was to ease up on strict obedience in the field

I disagree with your logic.
you can build the strongest obedience foundation possible but if the dog is not finding birds for you?
you don't need any obedience to have a sucessful hunt.
Now, we can talk about cooperation -
work on cooperation, leave obedience for outside of the hunt(for now)

I wouldn't be concerned at all. Perhap's he was involved with scent of another bird or these birds that got up were on the move. I have learned to totaly trust the dog's nose. (Just like a compass it doesn't lie ) This would be a great time to ask him what was going on ? I say if you have a good spot for birds keep getting him out & have fun doing it ! If he dosn't fully understand the game...... he will !
I agree with Pixie & less talk out there. Let him work.

There could be any number of factors involved with the dog's behavior - wind speed, how tight the bird was tucked (or running), fatigue... The list goes on. I would not dwell on it too much. If he is on birds consistently, his reliability will improve. He already learned something from this hunt - guaranteed. I won't comment on the training (too much/etc). I don't know your dog enough, but I do understand your reluctance to put obedience aside. I don't think that is necessarily what PB is saying - just separate out the field-work and allow the dog to run a little and figure out how to work birds (especially wild ones). Maybe limit expectations to an occasional recall (for safety).

One more thing - if the birds he is on 3 days a week are planted, you may want to review your process on planting birds. Dogs are smart - they figure-out the routine. So, if you are planting birds on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, Axe will point birds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays - because that is what you "trained" him to do (inadvertently). "Stumbling" onto birds may not compute to him, YET. Shake up the schedule on birds. Also be sure to wear some gloves when planting birds, or, better yet, have someone else do it.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd
