Well, not too bad for the last scheduled hunt of this season...  Sadie put up all 8 birds out.  Wind was so high, we did not get a good shot at 2 hens.  She retrieved 5 of the 6 birds we shot.  The one she did not retrieve ran into the ice on a pond, and although she probably could have gotten it, I pulled her back and did it myself - luckily the water was only knee-deep.  Better to get a little wet, than lose the dog!

Cloudy, Windy, cold, and snowy...

Perfect day for a hunt!

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Thanks everyone. I believe this will be the last "hunt" that we are able to do this season. For the season, we purchased 50 Phez for Sadie, and she was able to experience (from our counts), 82 birds (including 1 quail that she pointed). This includes points, and flushes. She did end up retrieving 15 birds (including the 1 quail), all in the last 3 hunts of this year (amounting to 67% (2/3rds) of the Phez we bagged).  We bagged 86% of the birds we purchased, but only 53% of the birds flushed.

Got some work to do before next season (mostly around my shooting ), but we are going to relax for a little, and enjoy memories of her first season!

Thanks again! Hey, we cooked up the Phez in a Moroccan Stew (I mentioned the book, "Girl Hunter" in an earlier post). FANTASTIC!!! The recipe is located (amongst other places) at www.tickledred.com/girl-hunter-georgia-pellegrini-moroccan-stew/). I substituted the Phez for the elk (obviously) and Chicken Broth for Beef Broth. I also used pre-pealed baby carrots instead of peeling my own carrots. Took a little time, but the prunes and dried appricots really brought an interesting flavor to the Phez!  I made it the night before, then slow-cooked it in the crock-pot for a couple of hours.  I served it on egg-noodles (something left over from my childhood), which was nice as well! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

So, basically -

you created your own dish?

One aspect of cooking that many people tend to not realize is that we can change any of the ingredients to meet our likes and dislikes.

Yeah, of course, but isn't that the intent of cooking :-)? I mean, following a receipe is just... boring... I always see a receipe as, kind of, a starting point - if you will. Guess that comes from being a part of an Italian family. My Great Grandmother (who came from Italy) was a "pinch of this, dash of that" type-cook. My Mom would catch everything before it was in the pot, and measure it to create the recipes. Now, we have a family recipe book, but everyone cooks in their own way.

Anyways, I think the recipe would be good with a little red wine added to it (maybe even to the stew). In any case, I recommend the recipe!
