Does anyone here kayak with their GSP? This is something I hope to do with Bells, as our camping locations are often kayaked to. Any advice on getting the training going? Still too cold here to actually get out, but I was thinking if I work in the garage in the kayak just on her learning to "settle" in the kayak with her head in my lap and bum toward the front, adding some rocking and paddle motions as she learns to settle....that hopefully she'll be ready to go when the season arrives.
I'm actually prefer to canoe and I take Zeke in the canoe often... though he does prefer to "gunwale surf".
He's actually quite good at it.
The trainer that we have used for agility is an avid kayaker though. She runs a "kayaking with your dog" class in the summer.

We went once with Zeke.
As you can see from the pictures, she usually has the bigger dogs sit in front of their owner facing forward. This has the added advantage that you can snug your knees around their waste to control their movements and it prevents "deck surfing", the kayak equivalent to gunwale surfing in a canoe. Having the dog sit close to you also can calm them a bit since their not used to the side to side movement.
Zeke's only taken me in once in the canoe. We were going down the Battenkill River in Vermont. He had already jumped out once that day, right in the middle of a little rip, but all in all we were doing pretty good. Our group was just floating down through a calm section. I wasn't really paying attention. Zeke moved to the same side as I was leaning and over we went (that was a pretty unstable canoe, but that's another story). I rolled the boat over and started to swim with it to shore filled with water. Zeke climbed back in the flooded canoe, prefering to ride instead of swim on his own!
