I will be picking a new pup in about 6 weeks getting the dog from the same breeder. Have a four year old know what a great dog she is. will have first pick of the litter and woundering on how to pick the best dog it will be another girl, let me know your thoughts.

I would look at the dogs movement, structure, temperament, etc, but I also compete with my dogs in obedience, conformation, hunt tests, and I would be looking for a dog that can do all those things. Coat and color would be less important although certain markings on a dog can give the illusion of sway back or other faults so the markings can figure in too. However, if you are not planning on doing anything in particular with your dog go with the one that feels right to you. You might also let the breeder know what you are looking for and listen to his opinion and suggestions as he has just spent the last 8 weeks or so with the puppies. Good luck and can't wait to see some pictures.

As for personality/temperament, most pet owners want something not too shy, but not too bold, so if a pup goes off on its own and is a real explorer it may be a bolder dog and likewise a dog that hangs back and is less out there might be shyer. You can sometimes be misled though it the puppies are tired they may not appear as outgoing. So again discuss what you want with the breeder.

If it's a hunter you want your best bet is to look at the parents and grandparents. There is no key to picking a pup. If you can - pick the pup that picks you. Spend some time with the pups and the one that makes its way to you more often is the one I would pick.

Your breeder can really help you narrow down your choices based on what you plan for your new dog. After listening to the breeder's advice, consider all criteria and then go with your HEART!

I agree completely with following your heart. Obviously if you're looking to do any showing or working it may help to look at lineage, but there's no guarantees with that. I think people always know which one is right for them. This part of the process is great fun and so excitiing.
