Past couple days Max & I have been moving some grouse. After work one day & before work the next. We also tried one of the area's that held some pheasents a couple month's ago with no luck. When you look at that cover I kind of walked away with a sad feeling kind of knowing the birds were all gone.  Makes you think every now & again I run into people  who over take their limit. I don't just mean the pheasents but woodcock & grouse. It would be sad if all the birds were gone.  On the bright side there seems to be a lot of grouse here  this season !

Sorry to hear that things didn't work out for you and Max. Hopefully the birds just weren't using those areas on the day you and Max went out and will move back in later. Good luck next time you go out.

As always it is tha selfish actions of the few that spoil it for the many..... Good luck with the grouse.

Greedy hunters do suck! i've had a few experiances with some! i try to limit my Daily take and yearly take in certain areas throught the year I.E tree lines... never shoot to many birds in one particular area if the area can't handle it! some areas can only hold so many birds... where others (mainly large unreachable by vehicle areas) can hold a ton! i hunt on hundreds of acres of moderatly new growth cuts that are littered with old logging roads that tend to hold a ton of birds. i'm lucky enough that my father and his father had this camp and it's being passed down to me! i shot about 30-35 grouse this year out of that area alone. i am currently not hunting it, cuz the season is over, but when taking dunkan for walks we still see 15-20 birds (sometimes 8-12 in a covey) on a hour to 1.5 hour hike. Some areas are exact opposite.... like the tree lines or some old orchards or barry patches. 3-4 birds out of those areas yearly is my max... even if i do see more! those areas can only support so many birds on the feed that is there! is your grouse season still open in NY?? it closes in VT on the last day of december! :( sucks too, cuz for some reason Dunkan works extremely well when there's snow on the ground!! So we still go out and he points up a bunch of birds and love's it... seeing how i tend to only hit one out of 3 or 4... shooting a blank into the air is almost the same as me hunting with him :)

In re-reading my post I felt it sounded like I was insinuating poaching of pheasents. Not the case. Here in NY there are no wild pheasents only state stocked birds. So it is only put & take. A lot of hunters & predators also so birds very rarely hold over.
Tried to cross reference the feeling of no birds left to the problem of poachers.

tcross in answer to your question our grouse season goes until the end of Feb. here in NY & not to rub it in Max & I get out most every day !! Mostly after work this time of year. Your flush rates seem a lot higher where you live then here in NY

February… wow, I’m super jealous!!  Hunting this time of year would be great! My flush rates are high… but only in that particular area! I am the ONLY person to hunt all that area, so i'm very lucky (at least that I know of) and the past few years the grouse count has been superb!!! I’ve been grouse hunting for 15 years (only 2 with a dog) and the past few have been by far the best for bird #’s and excitement!!  I'm glad to hear you get out most every day!  i too get out very frequently from august to the end of january, scouting and checking cameras and such... it's a good time!  However the coyote #'s are WAY up this year so i'm hoping the winter is harsh on them... So we'll see what the spring brings...
