How old is she? What are the circumstances when she does it? Time of day? Any more info?

Probably means she is trying to get your attention, but there is not nearly enough info here to really reach a conclusion.

I had a greyhound once that did that, but she would lead me to what she wanted. She never bit down or hurt me, but would gently tug in the direction she wanted me to go. If I stopped she would do it again until she got me to where she wanted me to be.

Mine don't open their mouths and put my hand in, but they will bump and nudge my hand while I am walking if they want something...most of the time Striker and bumping and nudging our hands cuz he wants us to take the ball from his mouth and throw it for him...

Sadie does the EXACT same thing as the OP. I don't see it as anything agressive, just a way of saying, "Hey... How YOU doin'?". I think it is the same as a dog that needs to have something in their mouth when they greet someone, just a bit more personal!

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Hopefully this isn't a complete derail, my 2yo sometimes nudges my hand for attention and/or leans his body against my legs when I'm on the couch and he's sitting. With previous dogs (1 lab and 1 golden retriever) I've always welcomed it and given attention. After reading a bit and being in the process of trying to establish clear boundaries for Rudi (where he fits in the family pack, etc) I'm unsure of how to react. I've been trying to give subdued reactions and engage him some time after he stops the behavior. At all times I'm sitting above him.

Where should you draw the line between rewarding active engagement by the dog (leaning, nudging) and not allowing the dog to control when attention-reward is given and when it should be ignored to communicate who's in charge?

Shorthairs are born leaners and love to be touching you which is why they are often referred to as velcro dogs. My dogs will lean on you when they like you. I never make a big deal and will let them do if I a watching TV or something like that, but if I am busy I just tell them no and give them a toy. They catch on soon enough that if I am busy that is not the right time to engage. They will still try though from time to time. I don't think it is a big deal, just the nature of this breed.
